Geisinger Dosimetrist in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania

Job Summary

Develops teletherapy and brachytherapy patient treatment plans. Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range in assigned clinical area.

Job Duties

  • Discusses desired treatment plan with the radiation oncologist and the radiation oncology physicist in Radiation Oncology.

  • Prepares patient contours using generally established methods including CT scans or MR images.

  • Supervises or checks all measurements and other patient data.

  • With radiation oncologist, locates on the patient images any points of significance and, within the contour, all significant tumor and organ outlines.

  • As appropriate and in consultation with the radiation oncology physicist, produces an external beam treatment plan for each patient, with appropriate alternative plans.

  • Presents treatment plans to the radiation oncologist for evaluation.

  • When a plan is accepted, calculates the exact treatment times or monitor units for the daily treatment to each portal.

  • Records all treatment plan data with respect to all parameters for all fields on the appropriate form and enters the form in the patient electronic treatment chart.

  • Prepares the dosage data and dosage distribution for brachytherapy procedures.

  • Submits documentation of charges for all procedure performed, in a timely manner.

  • Attends Radiation Oncology chart rounds and new patient rounds.

  • At chart rounds, reviews charts to ascertain that all physics checks have been done.

  • Verifies that all treatment data is recorded in the treatment record and that it also conforms to the treatment prescription or written directive.

  • Verifies that all changes or alterations in treatment are clearly recorded in the patient electronic treatment record.

  • Takes responsibility for ensuring that placement of appropriate documentation relative to dosimetry is placed in the patient electronic treatment chart.

  • Takes responsibility for ensuring that all films, necessary for dosimetric purposes, are appropriately labeled and filed in the correct location.

  • Performs routine Quality Assurance checks of planning equipment under the guidance from the Medical Physicists, as requested.

  • Instructs student technologists, nurses and other staff in the functions of dosimetry.

  • Observes and evaluates their performance.

  • Participates, as appropriate, in divisional educational programs.

  • Assists or supervises planning for special therapeutic procedures; beam modifying devices.

  • Cuts and constructs shielding blocks.

  • Utilizes other treatment devices.

  • Completes data for specialized protocols involving radiation therapy treatment.

  • Assists or supervises mold room procedures for the construction of immobilization devices.

  • Supervises preparation of computerized axial tomographic scans necessary for location of tumor volume, sensitive organs, placement of radioactive materials, etc.

Graduate from Specialty Training Program- (Required), Bachelor's Degree- (Preferred)

Experience

Certification(s) and License(s)

Certified Medical Dosimetrist within 3 years - American Association of Medical Dosimetrists (AAMD)
