DESCRIPTION OF WORK In this role, your main goal is to ensure the safe operation of motorized equipment for various tasks related to maintaining State Forest roads, trails, and facilities. This includes operating equipment for extinguishing wildfires, maintaining forest roads by widening them, working on side ditches, crowning roads, and other necessary steps. The position also involves operating equipment such as backhoes or track excavators for tasks like replacing culverts and establishing outlet ditches. Additionally, the operator may use bulldozers to widen roads, clean tail ditches, and work on motorized trails. Other responsibilities include using tractors and stone rakes to finish earthen roads, operating vehicles with a gross weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, and operating vehicles that require a Class A CDL. The operator may also be required to paint boundary lines, install boundary line tags, collaborate with land surveyors in surveying boundary lines, operate bulldozers or tree planters for establishing forest plantations, assist with tree planting projects, maintain woven wire deer fences, assist with fence construction, lead small crews in initial attack on wildfires, direct crews in patrolling and mop-up of controlled wildfires, maintain fire tools and equipment used in wildfire extinction, operate snowmobile trail grooming equipment, operate ATVs and equipment for maintaining ATV management areas, and use chain saws and hand tools to clear brush and maintain hiking and horse trails.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • This is a seasonal, full-time position without benefits. The season runs from approximately March until November at which the employee is placed on leave without pay.
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Tuesday- Thursday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Friday, with 30-minute lunch.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience as an Equipment Operator A; or
  • Two years of experience in the operation of heavy construction and specialized maintenance equipment used at this level with a gross vehicle weight of 32,001 pounds or more: or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience or training.

Special Requirement:

  • This position requires possession of a valid Class C Pennsylvania driver's license.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position requires possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) without the following Restrictions: L/Z-Air Brakes, E-Manual Transmission, and O-Truck Tractor/Semi-trailer Combination.
