A Research Scientist position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Terrence Deak to investigate the mechanisms by which alcohol-dependent neuroinflammation during early development and late aging contribute to alterations in neurovascular function. Expertise in advanced neuroanatomical procedures (stereotaxic surgery, immunofluorescence, image analysis, etc); molecular approaches toward understanding the neurobiology of normal and pathological aging; circuit-level regulation of behavioral processes are particularly desirable. The successful candidate should be highly motivated to submit independent grants, demonstrate unquestionable scientific integrity, and be able to work productively in a collaborative and diverse group. Strong verbal and written communication skills are a must.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct original research in the area of alcohol, stress and neurobehavioral processes

  • Prepare manuscripts for publication; contribute significantly toward grant writing efforts with the eventual goal of writing independent funding proposals

  • work with graduate and undergraduate students in a mentoring capacity

  • participate in lab, departmental, and national conferences where scientific studies are being discussed/presented.

    Job Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in neuroscience or related discipline, with a minimum of 3 years of experience post PhD.

  • Significant training and/or experience in aging research, stress physiology, neuroimmunology, and/or behavioral studies using rodent models.

  • Vast experience in small animal procedures common to neuroscience; wet lab skills for the biochemical detection of proteins, transmitters, and other signaling hormones/factors;

  • Demonstrated experience and success in writing manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication and exposure to grant-writing processes at the federal level

  • Demonstrate clear and critical thinking, the ability to plan high quality, original research, and to interact with other members of the lab/department in both a collegial and mentoring capacity.

    Additional Information:

Salary Range: $60,000-$70,000 annually.
