Description of Duties:

The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) in Syracuse, NY, invites applications for a full-time Senior Staff Assistant (Learning Strategist). This newly developed position will provide direct support to students with disabilities through academic coaching, oversee a to-be-developed peer mentor program, and host trainings and workshops on campus for faculty and staff. The staff member is a key member in the Division of Student Affairs, and will report directly to the Dean of Students. Occasional night and weekend work. This is a temporary position funded through June 2025 with the possibility of renewal.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist students with disabilities work to on study strategies, note taking skills, time management, organizational skills, writing support and other general academic support.

  • Connect students with disabilities to campus and community resources.

  • Oversee a peer mentor program.

  • Provide advocacy and support for students with disabilities.

  • Design and implement programming to support students with disabilities on campus.

  • Liaise with SU Center for Disability Resources.

  • Conduct outreach initiatives on campus.

  • Host workshops and trainings for campus members on disability awareness, and supporting students with disabilities in and out of the classroom.

  • Compile statistical reports on program activities/services and assessment of programs

  • Actively participate in staff meetings and retreats, and programs within the Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management.

  • Assist with major College and division events and initiatives to include:

  • New and Transfer Student Orientation (August and January) including Saturday of Service

  • Facilitating a section of first-year seminar to support the transition of new students in the fall

  • Commencement (December and May)

  • Admissions events

  • Family Weekend

    Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related a field

  • 2 years of relevant experience in a college setting.

  • Previous experience in education;

  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills;

  • Strong organizational and time management skills and strong interpersonal skills;

  • Ability to relate effectively with members of the campus community;

  • Ability to function autonomously and as a team member within a collegial setting;

  • Experience using databases and other technology, particularly Microsoft Office and Teams software;

  • Able to demonstrate sound decision-making and complete tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in rehabilitation studies, education, social work or related area

  • 3 years of relevant experience in a college setting.
