The Department of Surgery at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University is recruiting for a Vice Chair for Research, seeking a candidate with demonstrated and potential commitment for creating dynamic, inclusive, intra/inter departmental, national and international research collaborations that fosters an inclusive working and learning environment. This position reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Surgery. Working closely with the Office of the Vice Dean, the Vice Chair will be expected to support a vibrant base of physician scientists and PhDs in the Department who are engaged in all aspects of biomedical discovery - basic, translational and clinical research. At the foundation of these efforts, the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University offers a strong research infrastructure populated with state-of-the-art core facilities dedicated to providing rapid turnaround, high-quality data and robust results. In addition, the Office of the Vice Dean for Research offers expert assistance in identifying and developing intellectual property, navigating the complex regulatory/compliance issues integral to biomedical research, and concept-based experimental design. The Office identifies and targets emerging opportunities in extramural funding sources that support areas of research interests and expertise on our campus.

The primary responsibilities of the Vice Chair for Research include:

  • Oversight of the core research facilities of the Department. Determine how to best coordinate and modernize the cores so they run as businesses and upgrade obsolete technology.
  • Guide the implementation of the research strategic plan for the Department in collaboration with the Vice Dean for Research at RSOM and lead the effort to formulate a new research strategic plan within the first 1-2 years.
  • Enhance clinical research, increase the number of active clinical trials, and integrate research with the clinical enterprise.
  • Enhance collaborations with other Clinical and Basic Science Departments, Center and Institute Directors, and affiliated institutions (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Northport VA, etc.) to increase the number of NIH-funded cross-disciplinary research programs.
  • Develop the necessary infrastructure to support clinical research including biostatistics, budgeting, regulatory, etc.
  • Strengthen the development of research-intensive learners (residents, medical students) and faculty to increase the number of departmental training grants and career development awards.
  • Provide assistance to Department Chair in the recruitment and retention of research faculty, including service on the respective search committees.
  • Organize the annual Department of Surgery Research Day and other research symposia of widespread interest.
  • Coordinate and grow the administrative support of grant submissions and follow-up activities to facilitate external funding.
  • Coordinate the Targeted Research Opportunities (TRO) Programs, Bridge Funding Program, Clinical Research Funding and related funds and track the return on investment for these initiatives.
  • Represent the Department on a number of externally facing scientific interactions and cooperation with other institutions
  • Help unfunded investigators become funded through mentoring programs, pre-submission grant review, etc.
  • Promote the recruitment and retention of a diverse research faculty and workforce.

The selected candidate will hold a faculty appointment in the department of Surgery. Long Term Goals:

Reporting to the Department of Surgery Chair, the Vice Chair for Research will work in partnership with the faculty, research staff, the residency program directors and the Dean's office to expand interdepartmental and university-wide research, as well as developing, launching and updating a research strategy that will increase the Department of Surgery's visibility (both nationally and internationally) that will contribute to raising the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook's national ranking.

Duties as assigned:

  • Develop and participate in research projects that foster inter-disciplinary endeavors that could potentially secure solid NIH or other extramural grants.
  • Grow and promote funding via interdepartmental, interdisciplinary research within the Department of Surgery.
  • Expand and supervise the faculty's extramural funding as a prerequisite for promotions.
  • Grow the Department of Surgery publication output, by conducting monthly meetings with all the research faculty and staff in order to maintain a focus on high quality, high h-Index publications produced in the department.
  • Partner with the Department Chair, Division Chiefs, Faculty and research staff to develop a strategic plan and a research mission by extending collaborations with industry and academic partners from different walks of science and technology.
  • Partner with the pertinent parties in the Renaissance School of Medicine to expand and update the student and faculty mentorship programs to ensure recruitment, retention and success for physician scientists.
  • Work with the Department of Surgery's research team to expand the scope and breadth of clinical trials and other patient oriented educational programs in order to increase patient retention, satisfaction, and to improve quality of care.
  • Partner with the School of Medicine's leaders to develop Quality Improvement (QI) efforts to integrate research in quality improvement and patient safety in order to advance medical practices.
  • Organize and lead an annual departmental Research Day to continually evolve the Department of Surgery's research strategy and tactics.
  • Conduct monthly research meetings with the department's physician-scientists in order to work on evolving issues related to research, funding, and mentorship.
  • Work with both the Department Chair and the School of Medicine's leadership to develop new research initiatives that foster the expansion and inclusion of underrepresented minorities in medical research.
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
MD, PhD, MD/PhD (or foreign equivalent). Strong academic credentials evidenced by a track record of research work, publications, presentations and cross-discipline collaborations in basic/translational/clinical research. Track record of successful extramural funding and scholarly accomplishments. Must be eligible for a senior faculty appointment in accordance with the criteria established by the Renaissance School of Medicine for Appointment, Promotion and Tenure (School of Medicine's Criteria for Appointment, Promotion and Tenure). Leadership experience (PI) in running research programs/clinical trials. The selected candidate must demonstrate the highest level of ethical conduct and a commitment to diversity.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of 5 years of experience in a comparable Department of Surgery. Five years of experience in each of the following aspects of research: supervising laboratory personnel and space management, clinical trials., grant development, budget and resource management, faculty and personnel management, leading successful collaborative research initiatives. Solid track record of successful NIH funding, publications and mentorship. At least 5 years of leadership experience at a divisional or department level in a research-related role/focus comparable to the current position.
