Stony Brook Medicine (University Hospital) Phlebotomist Temporary in Stony Brook, New York

Collects blood specimens from patients through the performance of venipuncture, capillary puncture techniques and/or making an incision on the patient's arm. Provides phlebotomy services to patients in various inpatient, outpatient and offsite areas, following the orders of the patient's physician. Enters data concerning blood specimens into a computer database; maintains appointment schedules and logs patients seen and tests obtained; records results of patients tests and files them appropriately; keeps work-related statistics and performs related clerical duties. Supervises, teaches and provides support to medical technology students in both theories and techniques of phlebotomy by designing and implementing formal and informal programs of instruction ensuring that all established protocols and procedures for proper sample collection and patient safety are adhered to. Attends and/or presents related hospital in-service programs. Maintains proper inventory of supplies and materials needed for the daily collection of blood specimens. Participates in the overall function of the laboratory by assuming occasional substitution to other shifts or working prolonged shifts. Performs other related duties as required or directed.
