Ellis Medicine Instructor - School Of Nursing in Schenectady, New York

BASIC FUNCTION:

Acts as course team faculty member, course coordinator and/or committee chairperson. Responsible for teaching components and participating in course development activities for the curriculum in the classroom, skills laboratory, simulation laboratory and clinical settings. Assures all course components are scheduled, delivered, and evaluated in a timely fashion consistent with all school policies. Promotes adoption and use of evidence-based teaching/learning strategies for student centered learning experience, including the use of active teaching-learning strategies and simulation. Assures systematic processes are used to assess classroom and clinical learning outcomes. Assumes responsibility for total program development, implementation, and evaluation of the curriculum and program policies through leadership roles, committee work and faculty scholarship activities. Advises students. Responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with faculty, staff, students, hospital personnel and community agencies to ensure course and program effectiveness. Participates in the hiring process of prospective faculty.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Instructors must possess current licensure and registration in New York State as a Registered Professional Nurse, a current driver’s license, and a master’s degree in nursing. Two years of recent clinical nursing experience relevant to the instructional area and/or evidence of leadership behaviors is required. Teaching experience preferred.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Should be able to push/pull, lift/move 35 lb., be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers. Mobility requirements may include the ability to be stationary at a workstation for a prolonged period time in addition to being able to squat or be mobile for a reasonable length of time and distance. Communication requirements include the ability to comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to communicate and read the English language.

    RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:

    Assumes leadership role as course team member, course coordinator, and/or committee chairperson.

    As course team faculty member:

    • Collaborates with the course team and course coordinator(s) to develop and coordinate a nursing course or component of the curriculum. Supervises and participates in teaching, assumes responsibility for student assignment, analyzes data essential to patient care.
    • Writes expected behaviors related to Student Learning Outcomes.
  • Designs and teaches course content.

  • Evaluates the course offering and student’s progression.

  • Selects appropriate learning experiences (e.g., simulation, interactive learning activities, use of multimedia).

  • Supervises and evaluates student learning (class, clinical, skills, simulation).

  • Demonstrates organizational ability.

  • Participates in course level assessments (question development, review test questions, and analyze exams).

  • Shares leadership responsibilities for planning, implementing, and evaluating entire school program through BSON Organization.

  • Manages/mentors other faculty.

  • Participates in the hiring process of prospective faculty.

  • Participates in orientation of new faculty.

  • Initiates cooperative planning to meet course objectives.

  • Delegates teaching responsibilities.

  • Guides teaching activities of faculty.

  • Assumes a professional role as a nurse leader.

  • Acts independently without undue support.

  • Confers with Dean/Director regarding policy decisions/unusual circumstances.

  • Utilizes group dynamics to effect change and promote group productivity.

  • Analyzes situations utilizing problem solving methods.

  • Manages the School of Nursing for a specified time when designated by the Dean/Director.

  • Participates in continuing education related to professional responsibilities.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of recent trends in nursing, education, community, and legislation.

  • Serves as a role model for the nursing profession.

  • Participates as a member of a standing and/or ad hoc committee of BSON organization.

  • Establishes effective communication channels.

  • Interacts harmoniously with faculty, staff, students, hospital personnel and community agencies.

  • Advises students in academic/nonacademic concerns.

  • Provides relevant or pertinent resources (e.g., EAP, domestic violence, campus safety) to assist with non-academic concerns.

  • Refers students to Accommodations Coordinator, manages student accommodations as defined by Accommodations Coordinator.

  • Upholds hospital/school policy.

  • Effectively utilizes chain of command within the school.

  • Demonstrates excellence in faculty practice by engaging in faculty scholarship.

  • Engaging in scholarly activities that promote excellence in faculty practice (See Faculty Scholarship Policy).

  • Collaborating with the faculty, students, multidisciplinary healthcare team, and/ members of the community to promote an understanding of the nursing profession.

  • Engaging in evidence-based clinical and academic practices (i.e., instructional strategies for all methods of learning, standards of clinical practice, assessment and evaluation methods, principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion)

  • Developing active learning strategies to engage the learner in dynamic interactive processes.

  • Integrates new knowledge from conferences and disseminating information to full faculty.

    As Course Coordinator:

    • Functions as a course team member
  • Assumes leadership responsibilities for planning, implementing and evaluation of individual courses or components of the curriculum in collaboration with the course team members and the curriculum committee.

  • Assures course is delivered in an accurate, timely, and satisfactory fashion. Coordinates course schedule (I.e., class, clinical, skills, simulation, exams and proctoring) in collaboration with responsible individuals.

  • In conjunction with Dean/Director, manages course staffing, provides input for the budget for needed equipment and supplies, orders supplies, and creates strategies to maximize supply use.

  • Acts as a resource to course team and instructional designer on all matters of course delivery.

  • Documents course changes through the use of tools such as the Performance Improvement Plan and course meeting minutes.

  • Assures all clinical affiliation requirements are met (e.g., BLS, health assessment, and mandatory education) in collaboration with Students Services Coordinator. Communicates clinical learning objectives and clinical schedules to all constituencies. Establishes system to report clinical hours monthly.

  • Assures all course evaluations (I.e., course, clinical, student opinion) are completed, summarized, and shared with course team and curriculum committee.

  • Assures all student assessments conform to the student assessment policy at BSON. Coordinates exam development, analysis, and revision.

  • Assures course materials (e.g., syllabus, clinical paperwork, student resources, rubrics, clinical and exam schedules, evaluation tools, announcements, grade book, attendance) are up to date in the Learning Management System in conjunction with Instructional Designer and course faculty. Maintains principles of universal design.

  • Collaborates with the Accommodations Coordinator to manage student accommodations as defined by Accommodations Coordinator. Inform course teams of student accommodations.

  • Schedules regular team meetings throughout the semester/session.

  • Communicates academic warnings, midterm feedback, and student progress per BSON policy. Disseminates student grades to Registrar.

  • Communicates with students (i.e., course orientation, course changes, management of individual student concerns, dissemination of grades)

    As committee chairperson

    • Functions as a course team member
  • Uses the BSON Constitution and Bylaws to identify and fulfill the work of the committee, schedule and attend committee meetings, develop and revise policies.

  • Ensures the work of the committee is based on state and national education standards, accreditation criteria and trends in education and healthcare

  • Ensures committee work and recommendations are guided by and inform the BSON Systematic Evaluation Plan.

  • Ensures committee work and recommendations are guided by and inform the BSON Strategic Plan

  • Ensure that the committee functions within the school in a timely, consistent, and non-biased manner.

  • Collaborates with BSON employees and other Ellis Medicine departments to achieve the work of the committee.

  • Assumes responsibility for committee work.

    Salary Range: $36.07-$54.10/hour Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
