Description

$25 per Class

1 to 2 hours per week

Under the supervision of the Health and Well-being Director, a Group Exercise Instructor teaches a safe and effective class which promotes total fitness development for members.

Greets everyone by using names whenever possible; extends thanks whenever appropriate; makes relationship building the number one priority at all times. The position is responsible for ensuring that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA of Greater Rochester is conveyed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The member relations aspect of this position requires that relationship building be the number one priority at all times, attending to the needs and requests of health seekers, members, and all people within the YMCA in a courteous and friendly manner.

  • Conducts group exercise classes according to the YMCA of Greater Rochester’s Program Quality Guidelines, as well as the specific class format.

  • Teaches to all fitness levels and can modify the class choreography to meet multiple fitness abilities.

  • Expand his/her knowledge by seeking out and attending Continuing Education in the health and fitness industry as required by certification.

  • Supervise class participants and activities to ensure safety and report any irregularities to supervisor immediately.

  • Maintain active interest in and knowledge of current branch programs and shares information with members and community.

  • Be a professional representative of the YMCA.

  • Be able to work as a team member, assisting fellow staff when necessary.

  • Make yourself available to all members of the YMCA. Share your knowledge and be a resource for sound health and fitness information.

  • Ensure studio/exercise classroom and equipment are neat and clean.

  • Understand and follow YMCA emergency procedures when necessary. Maintain good attendance. Give supervisor at least two weeks’ notice of schedule changes.

  • Assume total responsibility for obtaining qualified substitutes when needed and inform supervisor.

  • Allow at least ten minutes to prepare for class and allow for at least five minutes after class to be available for members.

  • Arrive for assigned class well-groomed and in proper uniform.

  • Attendance at staff meetings is mandatory.

  • Products or services that are only part of the YMCA program(s) shall be promoted or endorsed by an employee to any member or guest at all times while employed by the YMCA.

Qualifications:

Possess and maintain current CPR/AED certification & Standard First Aid

  • Foundations of Group Exercise at the Y

  • Les Mills Programs

  • Les Mills Training/Certification

  • Silver Sneakers Instructors

  • Silver Sneakers Training/Certification

  • Silver & Fit Instructors:

  • Zumba Gold and/or Silver n Fit Training

  • Zumba Instructors

  • Zumba Training Certification

  • TRX Instructors

  • TRX Training/Certification

  • Group Cycle Instructors

  • Schwinn Cycle Instructor, Keiser Cycle Instructor, OR Spinning Cycle Instructor

  • Group Exercise Pre-Hire Practicum

POST-HIRE REQUIREMENTS

  • Attend continuing education courses (CEC’s) to renew instructor certification.

  • Attend Powerful Teaching Essentials within 6 months of hire.

  • Complete the YMCA of Greater Rochester New Employee Orientation Parts I & II within the first 60 days of hire.

  • Darkness to Light training completed within 60 days of hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to bend and stoop occasionally

  • Must be able to lift at least 15 pounds occasionally
