Hours: 37.5hrs / 52 weeks

Salary: $39,094 - $43,860

Summary of Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the FSSD English as a Second Language Coordinator (ESOL), the Adult Education Services/ESOL Instructor (AES/ESOL Instructor), assists in planning and implementing educational and instructional program services, activities, and events, offered by ABC’s Focus on Self-Sufficiency Department (FSSD). The AES/ESOL Instructor works closely with staff and partners to help consumers create Educational Development Plans that identify desired academic and vocational goals, and the steps necessary towards achieving self-sufficiency.

This position provides instruction and guidance to adult program consumers traditionally 18 yrs. of age and older, in both classroom and individual settings; coordinates and provides instruction in a variety of fundamental and essential developmental learning areas including: reading, writing, social studies, math, science, language development, and computer instruction.

Additional duties for the AES and ESOL Instructor include Community outreach, promotional, and consumer intake and screening efforts; recommends and conducts individual assessments, diagnostic academic, vocational testing, surveys and interprets findings on diagnostic instruments to assess consumer proficiency. Works with consumers and staff in creating and implementing individual learning and developmental plans that focus on literacy, academic, language, and vocational development; recommends and provides direct instructional and tutorial assistance in a variety of subject areas (i.e., literacy and high school equivalency preparation and testing, ESOL, etc.). Works collaboratively to ensure the proper securing and timely collection, recording, and reporting of all required documentation, forms, and necessary information related to consumers and program activities and outcomes, etc. Monitors assigned instructional and ESOL and consumer activities and data files and systems to regularly assess consumer progress; and identify needed additional supports. Monitors assigned educational and ESOL service activities.

The AES and ESOL Instructor oversees classroom-based activities and related logistics including: Develops and implements lesson plans; reviews assigned curriculums and topics; anticipates and outlines teaching strategies and classroom needs; provides direct classroom and individual teaching instruction in reading, writing, social studies, math, and science and computer instruction; monitors and records attendance, participation, observations, etc. and shares accordingly; as needed participates in case-conferencing and meetings regarding consumers and activities; identifies program and consumer resources and opportunities; monitors assigned educational and ESOL service activities; maintains data base systems; performs data input and analyzes information; maintains and prepares reports, log-sheets, and conducts presentations on progress as directed.

This position works closely with program staff to provide on-going information and recommendations, regarding consumer developmental needs and strengths; provides information and referral services to supplemental services and opportunities; and assist in transporting consumers to program activities and events.

The AES and ESOL Instructor also provides technical and consultative assistance to FSSD staff and administration; assist in on-site audits and monitoring visits; and works to ensure services are in accordance with established personnel requirements reflective of Action for a Better Community (ABC), Inc.’s policies and procedures, NYS Dept. of Education.

Qualifications and Education and Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree required in Education, Adult Education and Literacy, Educational Planning, Public Administration, Economic Development, Adult ESOL Instruction, Human Services, or related discipline. Professional Teachers certification, and and or ESOL and Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) certification; or other related credentials are preferred. Must be knowledgeable of local, State, and Federal High School Equivalency (HSE), testing procedures, regulations, and related pre-requisites and logistics.

  • Experience: Requires a minimum of two (2) years’ successful teaching and educational instructional experience, preferably with adults: demonstrated knowledge of the High School Equivalency exam (HSE), and direct HSE teaching experience is strongly preferred. Requires strong leadership skills, and a strong aptitude for directing and motivating individuals and groups. Experience training and managing volunteers and tutors, is a plus.

  • Must have excellent public speaking, presentation, and facilitation skills. Requires broad knowledge of group dynamics, consumer engagement, integration activities, and team building strategies. Must have the ability to develop and present educational and vocational preparation workshops, events, and related activities. Should have experience in overseeing coordination and addressing all logistics and needs; and securing all items needed for implementing assigned activities and events (i.e., equipment, supplies, materials, sites, and rooms, etc.)

  • Requires experience in administering and interpreting TABE assessment, standard basic educational placement test, and standard proficiency exams. Must have a strong knowledge of related educational assessment & diagnostic indicator tools; terminology & language used; and current trends and effective strategies in adult education and ESOL, and related topics.

  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills are required. Must have enthusiasm, sensitivity, and the ability to work with diverse individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds, in a variety of settings. Requires a particular understanding of the issues relating to special needs populations. Should possess a good understanding and sensitivity of related issues, faced by individuals and families moving from dependence on public assistance, to independence and self-sufficiency.

  • Requires excellent organizational, administrative, planning, and problem - solving skills. Must have good analytical and strong record keeping skills. Requires the flexibility and ability to work in fast-paced environment; manage multiple priorities and multi-task; and work with fixed deadlines.

  • Requires the ability to assist in planning, scheduling, and implementing all FSSD and unit special events and activities. Must have experience coordinating classroom, educational, and supplemental training & informational sessions; and implementing special events and related activities, to staff and consumers and general public.

  • Requires excellent communication skills, oral & written; experience in preparing and disseminating marketing, informational & educational materials and announcements and related communications for consumers preferred. Ability to interpret and present on program activities and data and reports; and conducts public presentations and training sessions as assigned.

  • Must have the ability to work with diverse individuals and groups and residents and people at all organizational levels, and from various community sectors. Requires the ability to assist in developing and maintaining effective partnerships with community, business, financial, educational organizations and other sectors of the community both public and private. Experience working with interdisciplinary teams and partnerships and collaborative structures, is beneficial.

  • Requires proficiency in use of all Microsoft Office products including Outlook; and requires the ability to assist in developing and managing all assigned program data base systems. Must have experience and knowledge of the following: Maintaining consumer information; proficient in computerized software for educational purposes. i.e., testing, and self-assessments; analyzing and interpreting consumer progress in meeting program outcomes; completing input and documentation in preparing reports, presentations and announcements on consumer and program status in meeting goals.

  • Multi-lingual and bi-lingual capabilities preferred: English and Spanish.

  • Requires the physical health and physical capability to work in an office and also a classroom setting.

  • Requires a valid NYS Driver’s License, and access to reliable transportation.
