MACHINIST III

THE MACHINIST WILL . . . Operate all equipment in the department with no supervision and understands all testing procedures and guidelines. Perform the machining of test specimens, NDT reference standards and parts. Program, set up, and operate CNC and other lathes to prepare finished test specimens. Set up and operate cylindrical grinders to produce low stress ground test specimens. Machine blank samples into reference standards according to supplied blueprints or drawings and document all information on appropriate forms. Manufacture, maintain, or machine jigs, fixtures, or any parts that are needed for the Met Lab or any other department's use. Calibrate the movements on the milling machine and electric discharge machine, the surface roughness indicators, and the micrometer sets. Complete hardness testing in the machining area. Makes recommendations to improve processes in the department. Understands all backlogs, what they mean and their impact. Identify highest priority work and adjust work schedule accordingly. Inform supervision of all out of calibration conditions (as found). Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MACHINIST Must be available for at least one of the following shifts: 2nd shift, 3rd shift High school diploma or equivalent required. 2+ years of relevant experience. Knowledge of CNC programming. Specialized knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures. Specialized knowledge of shop mathematics, machinability of materials, and layout techniques. Working knowledge of reference calibration standards and electrodes. Working toward Machinist papers. Problem solving - ability to solve moderately complex problems, make recommendations to improve standard procedure and/or processes. Customer focused - anticipates and understands customer needs and identifies solutions to non-standard requests. Ability to make changes in CNC programs in both the flat and round cells. Ability to write CNC programs in both the flat and round cells. Ability to machine special fixtures and adapters. Ability to cross-train in at least one other cell/area. Ability to work with minimal supervision. Ability to work with a continuous improvement mindset, i.e., make recommendations to improve processes, use team approach to problem solving.
