Senior Research Scientist

One fully funded Senior Research Scientist position is immediately available in the laboratory of Dr. Harinder Singh at the Center for Systems Immunology (CSI), University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Department of Immunology. The University of Pittsburgh currently ranks third in NIH biomedical research funding, and the CSI provides a unique environment accelerating innovation at the interface of systems biology, cellular and molecular immunology and translational clinical research. Dr. Singh is the Director of CSI, and we are physically located in the Assembly Building, a new state-of-the-art research and innovation hub in Shadyside on Centre Ave. We are seeking candidates with expertise in high throughput experimental as well as machine learning approaches (especially deep learning) enabling the analyses of signaling and gene regulatory network analyses in the immune system. Research projects are funded by NIH and DOD awards.

Our research program is highly interdisciplinary, and we provide a training environment tailored to individuals, based on their background and interests. There are several career development opportunities including support for conference travel as well as mentorship and guidance to apply for funding/career development awards. Qualifications: Candidates must have a PhD in a quantitative discipline and have substantial (at least 7 years after earning PhD) additional research experience. Possible disciplines include, but are not limited to, computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology/systems immunology, bioengineering/biomedical engineering and genomics.

Job Summary

Serves as subject matter expert and conducts independent scientific research projects from inception to presentation. Prepares and crafts various complex documentations of research results into manuscripts, proposals, grant applications, and presentations. Trains undergraduates, junior lab members, and research technicians. Manages laboratory policies and coordinates high-level work and project development in collaboration with other specialists.

Essential Functions 1. The first direction involves the application of machine learning approaches in the context of a range of immunological disorders.

2. The second direction involves studying the impact of genetic variation on signaling and gene regulatory networks in autoimmune diseases.

Both directions provide ample opportunities both for very creative method development, and for applications of these techniques to questions of very high relevance to human health and disease.
