Reference #: 2021851 As one of the oldest forms of applied science and engineering, Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Metallurgical Engineering was founded in 1906 and named after its emphasis on the study of metals. Since then, our field has broadened to include all classes of materials from ceramics and polymers to semiconductors and biological materials.Whereas early eras of civilization were widely identified by human's ability to work with new material (Stone Age, Bronze Age), today our abilities and projects span a variety of materials and combine everything from physics and chemistry to civil and electrical engineering.

Carnegie Mellon University is searching for a Materials Innovation Laboratory Manager to join their team. The Materials Innovation Laboratory (MIL) is a student-centered facility of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE). Located in Doherty Hall, the MIL serves as the primary undergraduate space used for course-related projects and laboratories. The facility houses a range of materials research and innovation instrumentation, including a range of processing, property testing, and structural characterization equipment. The MIL is accessed by users of varied educational backgrounds and research motivations including as an accessible Maker Space for independent users.

Core responsibilities include:

Managing and overseeing the daily activities of the MIL, facilitating, and supporting academic, research, and independent projects related to courses within MSE and carried out within the MIL.

Identifying, ordering, and maintaining inventory of all necessary supplies for the general operation of the facilities; safely maintaining an appropriate supply inventory, including working with EHS to safely maintain chemical and biological hazardous material.

Overseeing the calibration and operation of a wide variety of laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including troubleshooting user problems.

Providing maintenance or repair services, or schedules such services, for all laboratory facilities, equipment, and instrumentation. Recommends equipment repair or purchase.

Overseeing and managing scheduling of laboratory and equipment usage, in collaboration with MSE IT staff, as well as Laboratory relevant EHS and user databases (e.g., BioRaft).

Assuring that laboratory and its activities meet university, regulatory, and government standards. Works with EHS to ensure proper laboratory safety is practiced and maintained, assuring that quality checks on safety of laboratories are completed. Provides reports of laboratory activities as needed.

Participating in budgeting and financial reporting of laboratory activities as needed, as well as in laboratory organization and equipment selection / procurement / installment.

May supervise laboratory staff as appropriate, including student workers; provides regular feedback, coaching, and mentoring when supervising.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in MSE or related field required

5-8 years of relevant experience, including working with students.
