Carnegie Mellon University's Mellon College of Science, Department of Chemistry, is seeking an ambitious full-time Instrument Specialist who is prepared to manage and repair the instrument inventory of a complex undergraduate education operation with over 70 pieces of major analytical instrumentation, is an organized self-starter and would enjoy supporting faculty, graduate teaching assistants and undergraduate students in the undergraduate program. In this role, you will work closely with the Director of Undergraduate Studies and Laboratories to ensure that our laboratory coursework prepares the next generation of scientists. You will collaborate with multiple partners including Chemistry faculty, staff and other campus partners. Core responsibilities include: Working as part of a team to recommend the purchase of new instrumentation for the program. Investigating instrumental approaches to novel projects proposed by faculty and students. Interfacing with vendors to solicit quotes and determine suitability to meet program needs. Work with vendors and facilities personnel to ensure delivery, set-up and training for new instruments. Developing protocols for training faculty, graduate teaching assistants and undergraduate students on the set up and use of laboratory instrumentation. Meet regular and frequent deadlines to ensure instruments are ready for student use according to the class schedule. Meet with student and department teaching assistant teams to advise them on problem solving and troubleshooting issues involving equipment or instrumentation. Work independently and interface with company technical representatives towards the repair of instrumentation. Work with lab technicians and teaching assistants on processes for routine care and maintenance of equipment. Developing written documentation supported by photos and graphics that translate complex manuals into more basic operating instructions for faculty and staff. Assisting in instrument set-up prior to student arrival on a semesterly and daily basis. This requires interfacing with faculty in each class ongoing during a particular semester in each of our three large undergraduate laboratories to meet their class schedules. Helping to ensure that all students work safely and effectively with our instruments. Working as part of a team of faculty and staff to contribute to the high-quality undergraduate chemistry lab program. Maintaining and accurate equipment and instrumentation inventory. Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform physical work in the receipt and storage of equipment.

Ability to adapt protocols for classroom experiments and provide technical support. Strong knowledge of chemistry, especially as related to quantitative analysis, and safety in the laboratory. Ability to use software tools to maintain accurate and detailed records and develop electronic users' protocols. Sensitivity to maintaining and safeguarding confidentiality regarding student and department information. Qualifications: Associate degree with electronic experience; preferred Bachelor's degree in Chemistry. 3-5 years of instrumentation repair experience. Requirements: Successful background check Child Protection Clearances (Act 153)
