Coordinator, Diverse and Inclusive Collections and Programs

Job Summary: As Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh (CLP) embarks on a new strategic plan in 2024, we are excited to increase the capacity of all employees to operationalize inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility in their work. The Coordinator of Diverse and Inclusive Collections & Programs leads the enhanced development of Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's (CLP) approach to BIPOC collections and programming.  They will lead related CLP Strategic Plan initiatives including implementing the Vivian Ann Davidson Hewitt Initiative for celebrating and supporting BIPOC members of our community. Under the direction of the Director of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Accessibility (IDEA), the coordinator works as a member of the IDEA team and in close collaboration with the Office of Programmatic Services, Collection Development, and Public Service. 

*Location: *CLP-Main, Pittsburgh, PA

Work Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Supervisor: *Deborah Rogers-Director-Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, & Accessibility *Salary: $62,000-$65,000 per year

  *Essential Functions:  *

  • Initiate and develop framework and plans for CLP's approach to expanding BIPOC collections and programming. Guided by this framework and plan, expand the Library's collection in scope and scale; 
  • Co-create community focused programming and collections in collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders; 
  • Guide successful implementation of CLP Strategic Plan initiatives including the Vivian Ann Davidson Hewitt Initiative---including the annual Hewitt Lecture and Artist in Residence Series; 
  • Collections promotion through display creation, booklists, community picks, and exhibits; 
  • Provide leadership, training and professional development for the library's artists in residence and other internships, fellowships, and volunteer opportunities; 
  • Work directly with the public through planning, dialogue and co-design activities in relation to expanding BIPOC centered collections and programming and community engagement with the same; 
  • Engage in relevant service and programming discussions to influence innovation and service design;  
  • Research, analyze, and act upon data and trends in libraries related to diverse collections, programs, and services, both locally and nationally;  
  • Foster community engagement, mobilization and input;  
  • Support the work of the IDEA department; and  
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to manage a budget, including grant and special funds; 
  • Knowledge of current trends and issues in and beyond the library arena and the ability to provide a rich and creative understanding of their implications for effective library services;  
  • A resiliency and commitment to antiracism, diversity, equity, inclusion, access and accessibility that reflects a deep understanding of current thinking in the field; 
  • Ability to translate best practices into strategies and action and remain committed through compl xities and challenges; 
  • Exceptional presentation, group facilitation, listening, verbal and written communication skills--with an emphasis on cultural competency, agility, and flexibility; 
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate effective group process and decision-making;
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-divisionally to move work forward;
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain culturally effective working relationships with individuals from various groups and backgrounds which include employees, team members, and community members.

*Education and Experience:  *

The successful candidate will have an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which includes the following:  

  • Combination of 7 years of relevant education and experience;  
  • Specialized knowledge related to historic and emerging collection development centering BIPOC authors and artists, and related programming and community engagement with communities of color; 
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in developing and leading programs that engage a broad and diverse public, ranging from young children to adult learners; 
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting, contributing to, and supporting an equitable and inclusive culture for staff and community members. 

     

*Physical and Environmental Conditions: *

  • Must have ability to independently travel locally, regionally, and nationally as required;
  • Opportunity to work a hybrid schedule with full-time on-site hours at least three days each week; 
  • Ability to work additional occasional evening/weekend hours as needed.
