THE POSITION

The Department of Transportation is currently on the lookout for a skilled Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee to join their team. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The role involves conducting repairs, overhauls, and maintenance on a variety of vehicles and equipment such as cars, trucks, tractors, and construction machinery. Tasks include replacing and repairing components like shock absorbers, transmissions, clutches, brakes, and other parts essential for the proper functioning of the vehicles and equipment. The position also requires performing automotive mechanical diagnostics, tune-ups, tire changes, and repairing engine sub-assemblies, as well as adjusting and maintaining various systems like cooling, suspension, electrical, heating, air-conditioning, fuel, brake, steering, and transmission.

Additionally, responsibilities involve repairing or rebuilding construction or shop equipment, as well as diesel equipment by servicing filters, replacing water pumps, gaskets, and electrical systems, excluding diagnosing parts rebuilding and repairing diesel engine fuel injection systems. The role also entails reporting missing or broken equipment, maintaining records, and conducting minor repairs and preventative maintenance work on equipment by cleaning and servicing it. The position requires working independently to identify equipment problems using diagnostic equipment and procedures to determine repair methods, tools, and parts to be used.

Furthermore, the role involves repairing and maintaining motorized hand equipment like chain saws, compressors, jack hammers, tampers, hand mowers, trimmers, routers, patching machines, and heating kettles. Responsibilities also include reporting missing parts or broken equipment, maintaining a clean and safe work area, being aware of work area hazards, initiating proactive accident and injury avoidance measures, and reporting all personal injuries immediately for proper treatment. The position involves determining repair methods, procedures, tools, and parts to ensure compliance with all applicable standards and regulations, making adjustments to vehicles and equipment in the field to minimize downtime, and performing official state inspections including safety tests and road tests.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment.

  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years as a Tradesman Helper (commonwealth title) working in the automotive field;or

  • Graduation from a post-high school diesel technology curriculum of an accredited trade or technical school;or

  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

    Conditions of Employment:

  • Certain positions may require employees to possess an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s Permit or License on the first day of employment.

  • Certain positions may require employees to possess an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.

  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.

  • All positions will require employees to obtain a valid Pennsylvania Class 1, 4, or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.

  • All positions require operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission.

  • Certain positions will require employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.

  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
