Summary

The Senior Director of Residential Engineering Development will provide people and SME leadership, and development for project engineering organizations within our manufacturing plants. The dynamic leader will focus on ensuring the development of our engineers so that GAF has the resources and capabilities to continue executing our growing capital budgets and plant expansions. He/she will be responsible for periodic reviews of our engineering grade structures; corporate/home office support as well as plant-specific, with tailoring for complexity and size of plants.

The leader in this role will help develop plant-based engineering managers and project engineers by mentoring, career development, and guiding objective setting and goal alignment across our engineering teams. The Sr. Director will collaborate with Engineering, Procurement, Process Improvement, R&D, and Operations to stay attuned to new areas of technology and process improvements. The leader will guide the plant engineering managers to have comprehensive and realistic 1, 3, and 5-year capital plans and roadmaps to ensure alignment with company objectives. The position plays a critical role in developing and driving company strategy surrounding our approach to attracting and developing talent and executing all disciplines of plant-based engineering to ensure we deliver best-in-class operations results. This role is critical to ensure our operations successfully balance operational demands with increasing our manufacturing capacity. The leader in this role will inspire through multiple touchpoints and indirect reports with significant overall direct and indirect budget/capital planning responsibility.

The Senior Director will also play a critical role in ensuring the long-term viability and productivity of new and existing residential facilities through the leadership of an SME team. This team, comprised of experts in various engineering and equipment disciplines, is responsible for assisting plants through the identification of equipment and infrastructure opportunities for capital improvements as well as partnering with maintenance on standards for equipment and facilities design, installation, and inspections to reach and sustain the highest safety, availability, and production levels. In addition to guiding and managing this team, the candidate will use their relationship with plant and corporate resources to standardize best practices and equipment selection across the network, emphasizing influencing plant engineers to incorporate those standards and practices in capital and major maintenance planning. In conjunction with peers in residential engineering, the individual will act as a key change leader by driving continuous improvement efforts and best practices across the network.

Essential Duties

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Include travel requirements (manager to update as appropriate)

  • Evaluate current state and potential improvements for engineering grade definitions. Coordinate with HR, Compensation, and Commercial Engineering to revise if and when necessary to support the company’s long term capital and engineering strategies.

  • Evaluate and recommend staffing levels for project, process, and maintenance/reliability engineers on a plant-by-plant basis. Must consider the current state of facilities, planned improvements/expansions, current bottlenecks to OEE and other performance metrics, and long-term roadmaps for each plant.

  • Manage and lead the plant support SME group. With residential maintenance and process Communities of Practice, ensure these individuals blend maintenance aspects with long-term infrastructure and operations needs to define capital opportunities for sustaining and improving facilities and equipment.

  • Direct development of critical equipment and infrastructure standards for design, construction, and maintenance through the SME team. Indirectly, influence adoption through capital project planning and residential Communities of Practice.

  • Integral part of initial evaluation and interview process for all new hires at specific job levels in process, project, and maintenance/reliability engineering

  • Coach, mentor, and guide engineering managers on how to consider plant needs, roadmaps, strategies, and other considerations to develop 1, 3, and 5-year plans for the plants. Includes improvements to project cost estimation and benefits calculation

  • Foster a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement within the engineering and maintenance departments.

  • Stay up to date on engineering market trends to support strategic planning and senior management meetings.

  • Foster a results-oriented, accountable environment and drive the company culture and values forward.

  • Handle a wide diversity of work situations that are extremely complex. Utilize and leverage networks inside and outside the company, clients and suppliers, as well as other departments within the company.

  • Ensure adequate headcount and staffing for various positions within the plant and residential project engineering departments to meet operational needs in collaboration with workforce planning and operations teams to include informing appropriate organizational design, resource needs and facilitating stakeholders to critical decision points surrounding the same.

  • Collaborate with the GBS (GAF Business Systems) team on kaizen events and new business tools to ensure widest implementation among plant project engineering departments.

  • Assist, as required, in identifying and evaluating potential acquisitions and strategic partnerships to enable the company to meet sales, growth, and market share objectives.

  • Represent the company with stakeholders, clients and business partners.

  • Directly support business development meetings as requested.

Under This Roof, We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Chemical Engineering or related field

  • Advanced degree or certification is desirable i.e. MBA, Black Belt, CRE, CMfgE, etc.

  • Minimum of 15+ years demonstrated manufacturing engineering experience, ten of which are focused on leading capital projects and planning.

  • Experience in coaching/mentoring direct and indirect reports to influence their performance.

  • Proven experience with capital planning and direct execution of capital projects.

  • Demonstrated experience in change management within the capital planning and execution environment

  • Superior leadership and team-building skills with a demonstrated track record of leading teams to achieve best-in-class results

  • Practical knowledge and experience utilizing world-class manufacturing techniques

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a data-driven approach to decision-making.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across various departments and levels of the organization.

  • Strategic mindset that can balance long-term objectives with immediate operational needs .

  • Proven financial acumen to manage budgets and optimize resources effectively.

  • Familiarity with emerging technologies and trends in engineering and engineering management.

  • Solid working knowledge of operational and capital budgeting

  • Extensive and varied experience in plant operations, commissioning and start-up, and the application of engineering principles in a plant environment

Annual Salary Range: 193,500-247,250
