Chenango County Chemical Addiction Counselor in Norwich, New York

Chenango County's Behavioral Health Services department has an opening for a Chemical Addiction Counselor. This is a position in the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services Unit of the Chenango County Behavioral Health Services Department involving responsibility for providing screening and counseling services in the implementation of an alcohol and drug abuse prevention and/or treatment program. The incumbent performs client intake and assessment, conducts individual and group therapy sessions, and maintains a variety of treatment related client records. A Chemical Addiction Counselor may be assigned to provide services in Chenango County schools and the local county jail, and may also be involved in the development and presentation of educational programs for schools and community groups. Some travel is required to fulfill the duties of this position. The work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-level employee with some leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in individual cases. Supervision over the work of others is not normally a responsibility of an employee in this class. The employee does related work as required.<p> MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either: <li>(A) Possession of a Bachelors Degree or higher in Sociology, Psychology, Social Work, Rehabilitation Counseling or a closely related field; OR<li> (B) Possession of a Bachelors Degree or higher AND one year of full-time paid supervised experience or its part-time equivalent in group or individual counseling relative to personal or social dysfunctions which included intake and assessment screening, the development of treatment plans and the coordination of services for clients.<p> Special Requirements:<li>1. At time of appointment and continuing throughout employment, a candidate/incumbent must possess a valid New York State Drivers License, a reliable vehicle, and a driving record acceptable to the Countys insurance carrier. <li>2. Employees in this class will be required to obtain a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) certificate issued by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services.<p> The position has a 37 1/2 hour work week and starts at $25.81 per hour in 2024 and includes a full benefits package. A civil service examination will be required for permanent appointment at a later date.
