Chenango County Assistant Public Defender in Norwich, New York

Chenango County's Public Defender's Office has an opening for an Assistant Public Defender. Employees in this class are appointed by the Public Defender to perform professional legal work involving responsibility for assisting in the representation of indigent defendants as assigned by the Public Defender. The work involves responsibility for participating in the investigation, preparation, conduct and appearance in various court and legal proceedings involving felony and misdemeanor crimes as well as violations. The Assistant Public Defender also represents respondents financially unable to obtain counsel in family court and surrogate court proceedings. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Public Defender. Supervision is exercised over the work of clerical subordinates. The incumbent does related work as required.<p> SUGGESTED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a license to practice law in New York State. Special Requirement: At time of appointment and continuing throughout employment, a candidate/incumbent must possess a valid New York State Drivers License, a reliable vehicle, and a driving record acceptable to the Countys insurance carrier.<p> The position has a 35 hour work week and 2024 starting salary is $100,000 annually and includes a full benefits package.<p> No Civil Service examination required for permanent appointment!
