WSP USA Lead Substation Engineer in Newark, New Jersey

This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Substation Electrical Engineer- for our Boston, MA office. The following locations will also be considered: Newark, NJ, New York City, NY. Your Impact

  • Prepare conceptual designs for high voltage substation projects.

  • Carry out/review/analyze complex technical studies and project scopes.

  • Develop and review technical specifications, drawings and standards of equipment/ projects.

  • Develop and review the Design Basis Memoranda, detailed engineering scope and guide the assigned discipline engineers to align the engineering deliverables per project requirements.

  • Work closely with peers to ensure accurate delivery and thorough electrical design that will meet industry standards and specifications and meet good engineering practices.

  • Develop and review a substation design including One-Line, plan view and sections, grounding plan and detail, cable raceway and trench drawings, lightning protection drawings, lighting drawings, connectors and conductors tables and details, Station BOM and all other deliverables related to physical design of the substation.

  • Maintain complete project documentation with respect to engineering studies and calculations, all design packages, as-built requirements and return data information.

  • Develop & maintain good working relationship with internal groups that support project such as other Engineering disciplines, Drafting, Procurement, Construction and Project Management etc.

  • Select equipment and material and preparation of specifications for material, equipment, construction and installation work.

  • Review of internal and external designs for code compliance, good design practice and constructability.

  • Coordinate design activities with other multi-discipline project team members.

  • Provide construction support including resolving site queries, attending site meetings and performing site inspections during the construction phase of projects.

  • Mentor and provide guidance to developing junior engineers within the department.

  • Support technical proposals.

  • Reports to the Substation Engineering Manager, East

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.

  • A minimum of 7+ years’ experience in utility scale substation physical design.

  • Deep knowledge of high voltage major equipment, such as power and instrument transformers, circuit breakers, disconnects, FACTS devices, capacitive and inductive compensation etc.

  • Ability to write major equipment specifications.

  • Experience in the design of wiring schematics is mandatory.

  • Knowledge of modern power systems, power system protection and relay technologies

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PE registration in the US and ability to register in other US States is preferred.

  • Without PE license, a P. Eng license from Canada will be an asset.

  • Experience with HVDC equipment is an asset.

  • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical and Substation Sesign Suite (SDS) is an asset.

  • Experience on System study - P&C and ARC-Flash study software like PSCAD , PSS/E, ASPEN, EasyPower or ETAP is an asset

  • Knowledge of Renewable projects (Solar , Wind farm, Hydro and BESS) and data center projects is a strong plus.

  • Strong client focus.

  • Experience with Station equipment FAT witness is an asset.

  • Knowledge of High Voltage & Utility codes and standards.

Compensation and Benefits

Expected Salary: $111,200 - $189,000
