The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Tosches Lab conducts research on vertebrate brain evolution and regeneration, using the Iberian newt Pleurodeles waltl, a salamander species, as the main research organism. The Tosches lab is a highly dynamic, interdisciplinary, and collaborative environment committed to promoting a culture of diversity and inclusion in science.

The Research Staff Assistant will report to the Principal Investigator. The incumbent will participate in a brain regeneration research project. The project involves running experiments, performing routines, and regenerating salamander brain analyses.

This is a 1-year, full-time grant-funded position with the possibility of renewal contingent on securing additional funding.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the PI in conducting experiments on brain regeneration, potentially involving surgical procedures, histology, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, microscopy, single-cell RNA sequencing, and data analysis.
  • Assists the PI in keeping track of the inventory of common solutions including acids and bases.
  • Maintains lab equipment and ensures safety measures and institutional compliance.
  • Works with lab managers and PI to order the necessary supplies to ensure the lab can carry out the necessary research and experiments in a timely manner. Supplies orders are submitted through Quartzy and other vendors.
  • Supports the maintenance of the salamander colony which include feeding larvae, preparing food, setting up and monitoring breeding.
  • Attends lab meetings and report meeting agendas, minutes, deadlines, and any other relevant information pertaining to the operation of the laboratory to the PI.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by Principal Investigator.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline is required.
  • 6 months of experience in a research environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in neuroscience, biology, or a highly related scientific field.
  • 1 year of related research experience in an academic setting.
  • 1 year of experience working with research animals and familiarity with data analysis.
  • Experience working with vertebrate animal models.
  • Research experience on animal diversity or evolution and/or advanced molecular biology techniques.
