About the Department:

The Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art is a catalyst for new research in the field of modern art. It funds fellowships and publications; organizes programs such as film screenings, study days, and workshops; and develops online archives and digital research projects. We host six pre-doctoral, post-doctoral and senior fellows as well as distinguished scholars in the Center each year, and there is a staff team of five. GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

Working under the guidance of the Head of Center and Research Projects Manager, you will support the delivery of a range of new web-based research resources in various stages of development. This includes two database projects that aim to catalogue the works of art acquired and sold by important dealers in modern art in the first half of the twentieth century. With proper discretion and confidentiality, you will research, compile, and organize these databases with input from various internal and external stakeholders.

This is a position with an established end-date or time frame.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Research the relevant works of art, their histories of ownership, and their current locations.

  • Compile location logs and reconcile against published and unpublished records.

  • Coordinate image acquisitions and image rights and permissions.

  • Conduct research in libraries to verify accurate artistic and bibliographic information.

  • Correspond with external institutions professionally and with discretion on artistic holdings and history.

  • Perform data entry, database maintenance and audit of records.

  • Collaborate with internal and external scholars on research and documentation.

  • Contribute to project planning meetings for digital initiatives.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of Center

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A PhD in a relevant field

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • The ability to work to deadlines.

  • Excellent record keeping ability.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

  • Understanding of confidentiality

  • Fluency in English

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team

  • Previous experience of, or demonstrable interest in, digital humanities

  • Experience with copyright agencies and knowledge of the principles of copyright related to works of art desirable.

  • Provenance research experience desirable

  • The ability to work in French is desirable.

COMPENSATION RANGE:

  • Pay Range: $68,000.00 - $70,000.00 / Annually

  • The advertised pay scale reflects the good faith minimum and maximum salary range for this role. The advertised pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage for any specific employee. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, education, special licensing or qualifications, and other factors.

Location Requirements

At time of employment, employees are expected to be located within commuting distance of the Museum. “Commuting distance” means that they are located in one of following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania (the “Tri-state and PA” areas), and be able to commute to and from the Museum in a single day.
