Histology Technician

Per-Diem

Overview:

Cuts, stains, mounts and studies specimens of human tissue to provide data on functioning of tissues and organs, cause and/or progress of disease, following established standards and practices.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Reports and escalates concerns to Laboratory Medicine leadership regarding quality assurance issues, safety incidents or other difficulties appropriately and in accordance with departmental policy.

  • Performs all quality control and instrument check procedures and maintains all related records.

  • Prepares and maintains paraffin, reagents, and other solutions and stains according to standard formulas.

  • Cuts, stains, and mounts specimens of human tissue.

  • Processes stat specimens expeditiously.

  • Participates in department QA/PI program and improves performance based on results obtained from QI activities.

  • Participates in Strategic Improvement Process activities as appropriate and requested including committee membership.

  • Collaborates with peers, physicians and other members of the health care team as appropriate.

  • Acts as Clinical Supervisor, as needed.

  • Maintains Section equipment and supplies. Orders supplies when stock is low or near expiration date - as applicable.

  • Performs preventive maintenance on image analyzer and slide maker. Does not use expired reagents. Notifies supervisor when stock is low or near expiration date.

  • Maintains required files, records and reports on an ongoing basis. Facilitates and participates in the development of test script and all phases of system testing.

  • Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the department.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • NY State license; either Histotechnician or Clinical Laboratory Technology

  • Associate Degree in Histotechnology or Medical Technology

USD $65.00/Hr.
