Organization Overview: The Goddard Riverside Community Center (Goddard Riverside) and the Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center (Isaacs Center) are well-established Manhattan community-based agencies that support services to approximately 30,000 New Yorkers. We are two of New York City’s leading human services organizations meeting the needs of children, youth and families, homeless individuals, and older adults through-out Manhattan and New York City. We work every day for a fair and just society where all people have the opportunity to make choices that lead to better lives for themselves and their families. The Isaacs Center focuses primarily on the needs of children and low-income families, out-of-school and out-of-work youth, and aging New Yorkers. We operate at community centers located in the neighborhoods of East Harlem and Yorkville, and seek to deliver programs that are impactful, innovative, and intergenerational.

Purpose of Position:Conduct basic to mid-level repairs to plumbing, electrical, mechanical and masonry in the building, apartments, and exterior grounds. Assistance maintaining the health and safety of the building and grounds.

Schedule:Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm

Hourly Rate:$21.00

Roles, Responsibilities, and Essential Duties

  • Complete tasks and work orders assigned to include but not limited to explanatory.

  • Complete work orders within 24- 48 hours, if unable to complete report to immediate supervisor as to why and document on the work order.

  • Communicate effectively and professionally both written and orally with residents and staff, vendors and community members to obtain details needed to complete tasks or respond to new requests.

  • Able to access, diagnose and determine the next course of action needed to complete repairs or tasks.

    Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • Education High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.

  • Experience and Preferred Qualifications Minimum of 5 year’s experience as handyman skills included but not limited to, locks, plumbing, electrical.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Sufficient familiarity with masonry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical basic principles and terminology and to understand and solve simple problems.

  • Theoretical and Practical knowledge of handyman duties that enable personnel to perform repairs and tasks to reduce the use of vendors, contractors, etc.

  • Ability and willingness to learn additional skills such as licenses, and certifications for plumbing, electrical, sprinkler, etc.

  • Staff should be able to communicate effectively, work with a team, and provide good customer service while working in a fast-paced environment.

    Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Able to work indoors and outdoors during all seasons.

  • Knowledge of safety protocols with lifting, use of chemicals and use of machinery

  • Able to lift at least up to 50lbs, constant standing, walking, climbing stairs, climbing ladders

  • Some nights and weekend days may be required due to staffing shortages.
