Job Description
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the city.
DEP’s Green infrastructure program designs, constructs and maintains a range of Green Infrastructure assets that collect stormwater from streets, sidewalks, and other hard surfaces before it can enter the sewer system or cause local flooding. By reducing the amount of stormwater that flows into the Sewer System, green infrastructure helps prevent Combined Sewer Overflows and improves the health of local waterways.
The Bureau of Environmental Planning and Analysis at the New York City Department of Environmental Protection is seeking an Administrative Horticulturalist for the NYC Green Infrastructure Maintenance Program. This is a management class position, with several assignment levels. Administrative Horticulturalist plan, coordinate, and oversee the development and progress of various horticultural activities throughout the city.
Under general supervision, the selected candidate will have the following primary responsibilities:
Under administrative direction, with extremely wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgement, initiative, and action, performs extremely difficult, responsible, and complex work in
planning, coordinating, and overseeing the development and progress of various horticultural green infrastructure activities throughout the city.
The administrative horticulturalist will also develop and negotiate contracts including making determinations of costs, of time estimates, and of sources of funding associated with maintenance
related to green infrastructure horticultural projects.
Directs a staff of project management professionals engaged in managing the timely and cost-effective implementation of major projects for the green infrastructure program.
Directs the oversight of green Infrastructure maintenance projects from initiation to completion.
Directs technical project management operations including project planning, budget, and scope development, vendor procurement, design and construction management, and project close-
outs.
In the temporary absence of supervisor, may assume the duties of that position.

Qualifications
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with major study in horticulture, arboriculture, or landscape architecture and four years of full-time, paid experience in horticultural work of which two (2) years must have been in a supervisory, administrative, consultative, managerial, or executive capacity; or
A satisfactory equivalent. However, all candidates must have at least a high school diploma or evidence of having passed an examination for a high school equivalency diploma and one year of supervisory, administrative, consultative, managerial, or executive experience as described above.
