POSITION DETAILS

The Dolciani Math Center is a College-wide Center for mathematics, statistics and quantitative reasoning at Hunter College. The Deputy Director of the Math Center will be responsible for the oversight of academic programs already in place and will work collaboratively with the Director in the development of new programs and initiatives that will continue to advance the mission of the Center, both virtually and on-site. The Deputy Director will bring expertise in new methods (including on-line learning) that will allow the MDMLC to stay current with the best practices in Math, Statistics, and quantitative reasoning (QR). The Deputy Director will be an excellent problem solver who can independently identify areas that need attention and create solutions. In addition, the Deputy Director will oversee all operations in the absence of the Director.

In addition to the CUNY overview, the Deputy Director's responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

• Working with the Director to develop short-term and long-term goals for the Center as well as other policy-setting activities, and monitoring progress towards them;

• Supervising all personnel to ensure the highest quality of service whether onsite or virtual, and resolving issues as they arise;

• Reviewing current mathematics education/learning center research, and developing research-based programs to support student needs;

• Recruiting and supervising tutors, session leaders, and support staff in the Center and developing training programs for such;

• Working with the Director in the creation and supervision of math/stat/QR-related programs and materials for special interest groups in the College and participating as part of a team in the delivery of such programs;

• Working collaboratively with representatives of schools, departments and units to develop and implement Quantitative Reasoning initiatives for their respective schools, departments and units;

• Identifying, evaluating and securing multi-media materials and tutorial programs to support students in all mathematics and statistics courses as well as related college-wide courses, with the ability to write such materials as need be;

• Working with the Director in the assessment of programs and resources and conducting observations and performance reviews as appropriate;

• Developing strategies to increase student participation in the Center;

• Responding to student queries at the Math Center circulation/reception area.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and six years' related experience required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Education: Either Masters or advanced degree in Education with Bachelor’s in Mathematics, Statistics, or Math Education; or Masters or advanced degree in Mathematics or Statistics with Bachelor’s in Education

• Experience in working in a comprehensive Math Support Center

• Evidence of leadership role in an academic or administrative setting

• Teaching experience at the college-level

  • Implements and monitors a comprehensive student support program based on targeted academic resources such as tutoring, remedial and/or other related support services

  • Prepares outcomes assessment to further develop center offerings; sets goals and objectives; and supports strategic plan

  • Creates, implements and delivers seminars, workshops and other programs to meet the needs of students and faculty

  • Collaborates with academic departments and other units to design, execute and improve center offerings

  • Oversees promotional material development and center communications utilizing various media formats

  • Prepares analytical and statistical reports for management

  • Manages professional, instructional and/or clerical staff; may administer department budget

  • May seek additional funding by identifying new revenue sources and grants

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Salary commensurate with education and experience, within salary range: $86,645-$93,491.
