ASPCA Custodian in New York, New York

Summary:

The goal of the Facilities team is to ensure all ASPCA locations are fully operational so that staff and volunteers have optimum conditions to meet their program and department goals. In addition, the Facilities team ensures a healthy environment for all animals that visit our locations, whether on a short-term or long-term basis.

Under the general direction of the Facilities Manager at our 92nd Street location in Manhattan, the Custodian is responsible for the general building maintenance and daily work to keep the ASPCA's facilities in a clean and orderly condition. They are responsible for the cleaning and maintenance functions on either a day, evening or overnight shift to ensure building cleanliness for animals, staff, volunteers and visitors.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

General Building Maintenance: (90%)

  • Utilize work order system to update assigned work orders
  • Clean restrooms and locker rooms: clean and sanitize plumbing fixtures, shower stalls, partitions, wall and floor tile, mirrors, dispensers, air vents, replenish paper products and toiletries, waste containers and remove garbage, sweep, mop, etc.
  • Clean offices and work stations: clean, sanitize and dust work surfaces, furniture and equipment, clean glass, sweep and mop, remove garbage and recycling and clean waste containers, etc
  • Medical areas: disinfection protocols, clean, sanitize, polish and dust work surfaces, furniture and equipment, clean glass, sweep and mop, remove garbage and recycling and clean waste containers, etc as needed
  • Flooring care: sweep, mop, vacuum, Strip, clean, buff and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors, vacuum and shampoo carpets.
  • Perform protocols throughout facility, using approved practices and personal protective equipment (PPE) to sanitize spaces
  • Clean windows, mirrors, glass partitions and surfaces throughout facility
  • Clean all tile, Corian concrete and terrazzo where appropriate, throughout building, utilizing the appropriate/ approved cleaning supplies and equipment.
  • Clean roof drains, gutters; as well as, remove waste and debris on roof
  • Clean sidewalk, curb, ramp and street 18" from the curb. Task may require the use of a pressure washer as needed/ assigned
  • Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas, in and around front of facility, using snow shovels, snow throwers and snow melting chemicals and spreaders, etc.
  • Replenish supplies in stock rooms, slop sinks, conference rooms, offices, and restrooms
  • Replace light bulbs throughout the facility as needed
  • Remove trash and recycling containers out of and into the building and prepare for sanitation pick up
  • Set up rooms for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc.
  • Aid Senior Custodian and Forepersons in perform minor general repairs including but not limited to: painting, mounting pictures/ paintings/ shelving/ etc.on walls, sanding, spackling, caulking, unclogging drains/ toilets/ sinks with plunger/ auger, replace ceiling tiles, replace kennel locks
  • Use hand tools to perform general repairs; which includes but is not limited to: screw drivers, wrenches, hand sanders, taping/ putty knives, utility knives, hammers, augers, and plungers
  • Assemble furniture and shelving as needed with the use of hand tools
  • Checking for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants
  • Transport supplies off site (i.e. emergencies and special events)
  • Clean company vehicles as needed/ upon request
  • Notify managers concerning the need for additional supply inventory or major repairs
  • Assist supervisor with work order request
  • Safely operate all vehicles and other job-related equipment
  • Provide coverage at other ASPCA New York locations and perform any related or similar duties at those locations
  • Available for overtime, as required, at all ASPCA locations

Operate Cleaning Equipment: (5%)

  • Floor cleaning machines, including but not limited to: wet and dry mops, brooms and dustpans, vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, buffing/ stripping machines, burnishing machines
  • Wet/ Dry Shop Vacuums
  • Upholstery shampooer
  • Pressure washer
  • Snow thrower

Other Projects (5%)

  • Assist Facilities Manager in performing safety and security testing/ drills/ inspections (i.e. Red Rover panic alarm testing, fire drills, emergency light testing, fire extinguisher inspections, etc.)
  • Participate as a Fire Safety Team member, including but not limited to, participating in fire drills and evacuating building occupants in the event of a fire emergency.
  • Participate in the onboarding of new employees

Qualifications:

  • Read and write fluent English (Required)
  • Physical capacity to handle heavy moving and lifting of at least 50 lbs., standing for long periods of time, bending and climbing stairs and ladders (Required)
  • Basic computer skill (Required)
  • Ability to follow directions in productive and timely manner (Required)
  • Able to work well as a team member with a neat appearance and a respectful attitude (Required)
  • Previous experience in all facets of housekeeping (Preferred)
  • Reliable, able, and available to work assigned shift (Required)
  • Skilled in use of buffer and extractor tools (Preferred)
  • Strong communication skills required (written, verbal, listening) (Required)
  • Valid NY Driver's License and ability to drive when necessary (Preferred)

Compensation and Benefits:

The starting pay rate for this role is $22.00 and falls under a collective bargaining agreement.
