The Lincoln Intermediate Unit is looking for Special Education Assistants in York & Adams Counties. The LIU provides programming in a variety of educational settings, including classrooms located within district buildings, community locations, the Franklin Learning Center in Chambersburg, Paradise School in Abbottstown, and York Learning Center in York. Our programs include Autistic Support, Behavioral Intervention, Emotional Support, Hearing Impaired Support, Intensive Learning Support, Life Skills Support, Multidisabilities Support, Preschool/Early Intervention, Therapeutic Emotional Support, Transition, and Vision Impaired Support.

There are two types of Special Education Assistants we are hiring for: Teacher Assistants and Personal Care Assistants. Below, you will find more information on these positions.

As a Teacher Assistant at the LIU, this position is vital in supporting students' educational experience, assisting teachers in implementing instructional plans and contributing to the overall positive learning environment. This position also ensures the continuance of the education program developed by the teacher. The commitment to student success and collaboration with the teaching team will help create an enriching educational atmosphere.

The Personal Care Assistant (PCA) plays a vital role in supporting an individual student's overall development by assisting in enhancing self-sufficiency, communication, interpersonal skills, social engagement, academic progress, and mobility. This role involves aiding the student in accessing their educational program through various means, such as providing assistance with balance, engaging in visual perceptual activities, refining fine and/or gross motor skills, assisting with boarding/exiting the school van, and offering prompts to maintain focus. Additionally, the PCA serves as a teacher assistant, contributing to maintaining a positive learning environment in the classroom, particularly when the student is working with another staff member or is absent. This position is integral to fostering a supportive educational experience for the student and ensuring their success in both academic and social aspects of their learning journey.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Must have or obtain and maintain a current certificate in first aid
  • Must have or obtain and maintain a current certificate in CPR
  • Must have or obtain and maintain current certificate in LIU-approved crisis management and intervention program, preferred
  • Relevant experience working with students in an educational setting, preferred
  • Patience, flexibility, and positive attitude
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively with teachers and staff
  • Must complete twenty (20) hours of professional development related to assignment each year (July 1-- June 30) to continue employment.
  • Must obtain highly qualified status within one year from date of hire
    • "Qualified" means meeting a rigorous standard of quality as demonstrated through a local or state assessment
      • Certificate of Competency -- free of cost and can be acquired on the job OR 
      • CAPE test 
    • OR having an associate's degree or higher
    • OR having completed 2 years (48 credits) of postsecondary study.

Terms of Employment: Full-time, 7 hrs/day, 188 days/year

Rate: $18/hr
