Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Business Manager I SPVR for the School of Engineering. Reporting to the Executive Director of the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT), the Business Manager I will work independently with minimal supervision within broadly defined work objectives of the Center's programs. The Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation is a research center with an FY25 annual budget of $13.6M. The role of this position is to provide business services management for the day-to-day operations of the research center with primary focus on finance, budget, and grant accounting, reporting, proposal development support, administrative staff supervision, and space and facilities planning. This position ensures uniform accounting and reporting objectives are met and there is an effective and efficient flow of financial information to appropriate university offices.Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Serves as the Business Manager I this position will be the primary business contact for center leadership and will organize and coordinate unit business operations and provide administrative and fiscal oversight of programs, projects, and/or processes.
  • Manages daily operations encompassing a wide range of business activities including but not limited to: grant and contract accounting and compliance, contract negotiation, and finance.
  • Oversees external funding opportunities aligned with center goals and objectives.
  • The Business Manager I is the primary internal contact and authorizer for center faculty and staff on financial and business matters. This individual has approval authority on endorsements, purchases, payroll, and agreements.
  • The Business Manager is responsible for financial and budget reporting and other research related resource reporting.
  • Works closely with the Office of Research, and other university offices as required.
  • Provides essential services and support to faculty and staff who are developing and writing proposals to federal and state agencies and foundations to secure external support for their research, training, and public service programs.
  • Assists faculty to submit high quality, fully compliant proposals on-time to improve chance of being funded.
  • This individual must have strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Requires a high degree of professionalism and tactfulness.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a Master's degree in business administration, accounting, finance or a related field with five years relevant experience in a higher education or research setting and/or increasing functional responsibility in a high-level leadership/managerial role that demonstrates excellent communication skills in addition to comprehensive knowledge and understanding of general business/financial/accounting/contracting principles and practices.
  • Requires professional experience in a public and/or corporate purchasing/contract negotiating environment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience in higher education environment is required, knowledge of the university environment, and computing systems are critical.
  • Strong oral and writing skills.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively and efficiently in a self-directed and self-motivated environment.
  • Ability to prioritize the work of self and others in a dead-line oriented environment.
  • Attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous interactions with transportation funding agencies; SNJDOT, FHWA, and
  • USDOT is highly valued.
  • Strong supervisory skills.
  • High degree of professionalism and tactfulness. Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills and highly valued knowledge of the university environment, and computing.
  • Proven ability to operate effectively and efficiently in a self-directed and self- motivated environment; and ability to prioritize the work of self and others in a dead-line oriented environment.
