YAI Jr. Human Resources Generalist in Manhattan, New York

  • Partner with New Jersey Leadership and Managers to ensure goals are met. Guiding and supporting them to ensure a consistent staff experience.  

  • Act as a liaison between staff and managers with support of Human Resources Manager to resolve employee issues including complaints and performance issues. 

  • Address all issues and concerns of staff members and participate in investigations as appropriate . 

  • Provide visible HR presence and support to staff and supervisors. 

  • Frequently attend and participate in operational meetings. Be able to present new HR initiatives at these meetings, explain the “why,” and foster understanding and excitement. 

  • Work with Senior Leadership to address any “crisis” situations that arise. Be able to see “the big picture” and create solutions for crisis situations while continuing to work towards YAI’s mission. 

  • Be able to assess and identify organizational needs, streamline processes. 

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with all levels of staff. 

  • Ensure the smooth and efficient onboarding of new hires. 

  • Processes all new hire paperwork, communicates status to supervisors, and maintains databases. 

  • Processes background checks; communicates status to supervisors; maintains clearance database. 

  • Roll out engagement and retention efforts. 

  • Policy and procedure development, implementation and advice. Be the go-to person for any policy or procedure related questions. 

  • Develop and champion new initiatives. 

  • For YAI New Jersey:

  • Source, recruit, and hire top talent.

  • Liaise between hiring managers and candidates to coordinate/conduct interviews, referrals, and related business processes.

  • Utilize various job boards, careers pages, and social media outlets to advertise and market open positions and upcoming vacancies.

  • Organize and attend career fairs, virtual interviews, and other recruiting events.

  • Regularly manage pipeline activity and maintain data integrity via our ATS (i.e., Workday), and proactively share data-centric updates with internal stakeholders.

  • Generate offer letters.

  • Partner with hiring managers on hiring needs and priorities to implement best-in-class talent acquisition strategies.

  • Respond to all general HR inquiries, audits, and requests.

Our Roots:

YAI was launched in February of 1957 out of a small school in Brooklyn, New York. Initially staffed by Co-Founders Bert MacLeech and Pearl Maze MacLeech alone, their pilot program served just seven people. According to Bert, from its very beginning YAI has been dedicated to providing innovative services for the I/DD (intellectual and/or developmental disabilities) community. MacLeech envisioned a, “total life adjustment approach, emphasizing personal growth, social responsibility, employment goals, and the development of independence for the individual.” At a time when institutional living was the norm for people with I/DD, this vision was nothing short of revolutionary.

YAI Today:

Today, YAI has a team of over 4,000 employees and supports over 20,000 people in the I/DD community. This extraordinary growth shows the ongoing need for these important services, and YAI’s success in offering them. YAI supports people with autism, Down syndrome, and Cerebral Palsy, among others. Operating throughout Downstate New York and Northern New Jersey, YAI now offers more than 300 programs for people of all ages.
