DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the operation of motor equipment and the performance of manual work normally associated with highway construction and maintenance. The work is carried out in accordance with established procedures and involves the safe and economical operation of equipment normally related to highway construction and maintenance, although an incumbent may be assigned to another department. The class differs from that of a Construction Equipment Operator I and Construction Equipment Operator II by virtue of the fact that a Motor Equipment Operator does not normally operate construction equipment. Depending on assignment, work is performed under the direct or general supervision of a higher level employee. Supervision of others is not normally a function of the class. Does related work as required. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the operation of trucks and other automotive equipment; good knowledge of the geography of the area; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions; ability to get along well with others; mechanical aptitude; willingness to respond to emergencies; willingness to work under adverse weather conditions; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
