The mission of the Office of Inclusive Excellence is to further Cornell University's foundational principle of "any person, any study" within the College of Engineering by providing a welcoming, caring, and stimulating environment for our community of scholars to thrive, with a focus on faculty and students from historically underrepresented, marginalized, or underserved groups in engineering. Through strategically tailored programming, robust support services, and close partnerships with other College and University units, we facilitate students' access to, engagement with, and effective use of the skills, resources, opportunities, and connections critical for ongoing achievement.


What You Will Do:

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Academic Affairs (a member of the College's faculty leadership) and Associate Dean for Student Services (a member of the College's staff leadership), the Director serves as a strategic partner, consultant, and leader for the direction and execution of strategic plans for addressing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging of undergraduate and graduate students within the College of Engineering. They will serve as a thought leader and trusted advisor to assist in engendering a better understanding of the complexity of the issues involved in creating and maintaining a more inclusive and diverse College. In collaboration with other key stakeholders, they will support the ongoing development and delivery of initiatives that speak to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in all its forms and ensure the College's structural systems support an inclusive climate and facilitate outreach, recruitment, retention, and success of a diverse engineering student body. They will be a data-driven decision-maker while embracing respectful dialogue and examining issues from a variety of viewpoints.


This Role Will:

  • Work with the Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Academic Affairs and partner with other College leaders and stakeholders as needed, to develop and continually refine the vision and strategic planning for diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in the College of Engineering.
  • Provide leadership on formulating new initiatives and examining existing initiatives that focus on the academic climate and systemic change within the college and across the university to support an inclusive experience for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Manage the overall administration of the office, including leading, directing, and conducting performance reviews of staff, as well as planning and managing budgets. Mentor staff and help them seek opportunities for professional development. Provide oversight and coaching for staff supervising student workers.
  • With the Senior Associate Dean and Associate Dean for Student Services, facilitate collaborations with related functional areas within the College including Student Services, Undergraduate Programs, and academic service units.
  • Engage in collaborative leadership to help Engineering students from historically underrepresented, marginalized, or underserved groups succeed and thrive.
  • Provide guidance and coaching as well as monitor and (re)evaluate decisions, priorities and plans to achieve the vision around strategic goals and aligned outcomes for professional staff managing student Scholars programs, outreach/pathway programs, and mentoring and success initiatives.
  • Develop and oversee the processes and communications required to implement and execute the strategic plan while partnering with the larger community.
  • Evaluate, assess, and benchmark existing programs. Use qualitative and quantitative data to assess and advance achievement diversity and inclusion goals using data-driven metrics to measure success and disseminate information.
  • Manage current grant awards and philanthropic stewardship. Collaborate on new proposals and enhancement of corporate, foundation, and alumni engagement.
  • Collaborate with Engineering departments/offices and relevant external partners to identify and ensure implementation of best practices that support the recruitment and academic growth of students from historically underrepresented, marginalized, or underserved groups in engineering.
  • Enhance their professional and technical knowledge by attending professional and educational workshops and work toward growing and nurturing their professional networks.

What We Need:

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Demonstrated skill in understanding cultural differences.
  • Proven experience connecting diversity, inclusion, and well-being practices to business goals.
  • A master's degree is required along with a minimum of five to seven years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in supporting student or academic affairs functional areas.
  • This role is primarily in person/on campus with flexibility as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a diverse team with direct reports and manage a wide variety of responsibilities in a fast-paced, dynamic organization.
  • Experience advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging with a track record of strategic planning and successful project/program management and related accomplishments.
  • Demonstrated ability to make effective decisions while working collaboratively with others.
  • Experience building and maintaining collaborative partnerships with internal and external constituencies.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices, in diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging.
  • Excellent interpersonal, diplomacy, effective and clear communication, active listening, analytical, and written and presentation skills for collaboration with a diversity of people at all levels.
  • Program development and assessment experience as well as the ability to synthesize information from multiple sources/data to identify key factors, correlations, and trends to develop data-informed recommendations and initiatives.
  • Capacity to innovate and solve complex problems.
  • Experience with budget management and resource allocation as well as maintaining effective administrative protocols.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and must be able to prioritize multiple and often competing demands under deadline pressure. Must be detail oriented but able to view larger policy concerns.
  • Proven good judgment, integrity, tact and discretion when handling sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Technical Skills: Demonstrated competency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.), Qualtrics (or similar Survey Tools), and FileMaker Pro (or similar databases).

What We Prefer:

  • Seven or more years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in supporting student or academic affairs functional areas.
  • Familiarity with student services, pipeline initiatives, and admission practices designed to support the recruitment, retention, and graduation of students of diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience with issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in STEM fields.
  • Experience in a complex, higher education environment.
  • Solid grant writing and/or previous experience with identifying and securing advancement initiatives that would strengthen Cornell Engineering's competitive edge.
  • Experienceutilizingtechnologyapplicationstosupportstudentsuccess.
  • Knowledge of the operation and culture of academic departments and experience working with faculty is helpful.
  • Familiarity with methodologies and practices for organizational change that can meaningfully improve climate, engagement, and/or belonging.
  • Availability to travel (e.g., workshops and conferences, recruitment events, development opportunities) and work on some evenings and weekends throughout the academic year.
