The Bilingual Food Pantry Assistant supports the daily operations of Mercy Haven's food pantry by assisting in food distribution, inventory management, and client services. This position requires strong communication skills in both English and Spanish to effectively serve diverse community members in need of food assistance. The Assistant ensures a welcoming and organized environment, helping to reduce food insecurity with dignity and respect.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the distribution of food items to pantry clients while ensuring an equitable and respectful experience.

  • Greet and register clients, verifying eligibility and maintaining accurate records.

  • Provide bilingual assistance to clients, including explaining pantry policies, available resources, and answering questions.

  • Organize and restock shelves, ensuring food items are stored and displayed properly.

  • Receive, inspect, and record incoming food donations and deliveries.

  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of the pantry, following food safety and sanitation guidelines.

  • Support volunteers and community members in pantry operations, offering guidance and training as needed.

  • Drive agency vehicle to obtain donated items for the food pantry

  • Assist with data entry and reporting to track pantry usage and inventory.

  • Assist with 1115 waiver reporting, case notes and invoicing.

  • All other relevant duties as assigned.

    Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required

  • Bilingual English/Spanish flu ency required

  • Experience with food pantry or other related social services preferred

  • Electronic Pantry Software and/or EHR experience preferred

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact compassionately with clients from diverse backgrounds.

  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation guidelines is a plus.

  • Valid NYS Driver's License in Good Standing

  • Physical Requirements: remains stationary for long periods of time in the office, moves intermittently throughout the office during work hours, reaching overhead, may push or pull 15-20 pounds daily, 20-50 pounds occasionally, repetitive wrist/finger movement, read/write reports and use computer on daily basis, ability to drive agency vehicle

    Shift: Tuesdays: 9am to 2pm, Thursdays: 1pm to 6pm

    Pay: $17.50 an hour
