WELDERDISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work in this position involves the efficient performance of a variety of welding tasks with a thorough knowledge of the trade. General instructions are received from the Garage Foreman permitting considerable leeway for the planning and performance of each assignment. Immediate supervision may be exercised over the work of welder helpers or laborers. Does related work as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY) Forges, repairs, and sharpens bull points, tar spades, chisels and special tools. Forges repairs and re-sharpens equipment and tools; Fabricates various types of equipment; Assists in the work of the mechanic; Welds bumpers, fenders, ventilating fans and motors and gear casings; Fabricates and erects metal or wire screens and partitions; Does electric and acetylene welding on all types of automotive equipment and on bridge construction work; Fabricates special equipment for Police vehicles including chain containers, dollies for the removal of disabled vehicles and hose carriers. FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Through knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and precautions of the welding trade; ability to do brazing and cast iron welding with gas; ability to fabricate structural steel and steel sheet by electric welding; ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions; ability to lay out work for self and others; good manual dexterity; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
