Description

Job Title: Phlebotomist

Department: MOB Laboratory

Reports To: PSC Supervisor/or designated Lead

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Job Summary: Direct interaction with patients and lab technical staff as well as other hospital staff and physicians; collects specimens for testing; performs limited testing. The Phlebotomist will be competent at delivering patient care for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. They will follow procedures set forth for ordering, collecting, processing specimens, and reports.

Job Results & Essential Function

Demonstrates Proficiency

  • Greets and serves patients in a professional manner

  • Accurately registers all patients in the computer system with correct insurance and billing information

  • Interprets lab orders submitted for testing for accuracy and completeness

  • Places orders for testing in the laboratory computer system.

  • Accurately evaluates elements of acceptability and accuracy for specimen testing

  • Positively identifies all patients prior to collecting specimens, including blood, urine, stool, and other body fluids.

  • Ensures specimens are collected in the required containers for processing.

  • Dispenses appropriate containers and instructions to patients for sample collections.

  • Daily surveillance of refrigerator and room temperature, remedial actions and documentation, as well as supervisor notification if required.

  • Maintains competency on the Nova Meter.

  • Submits orders for reference testing into reference test software, print requisitions, and labels for processing.

  • Prepares specimen manifest and samples for courier transport to the main lab

  • Establishes and/or develops standards, practices, and processes to ensure the accuracy of laboratory testing from the pre-analytical to the post-analytical stage.

  • Provides day-to-day support of workflow within the work unit; including disseminating information, assigning staff to cover for absences, providing technical assistance, answering questions, and resolving problems as directed by the Supervisor of Clinical Support.

  • Acts as a team player and works collaboratively within the team and organization.

  • Assists with developing priorities, goals, and action plans.

  • Responds to requests from Clinical Supervisor.

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to assist with the evaluation of programs and services.

  • Identifies better, faster, more efficient ways of doing tasks as well as eliminates unnecessary work and all non-value-added activities to enable a focus on work that generates greater value.

  • Responds to requests from Clinical Supervisor, and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to assist with the evaluation of programs and services. Communicates with Supervisor regarding cost savings initiatives and planning.

  • Utilizes understanding of regulatory requirements to identify ways to improve process quality and compliance.

  • Successful completion of the on-site training/orientation process is required.

Requirements

Education & Experience

High School Diploma or GED is preferred

Prior experience in the field performing venipuncture is preferred

Knowledge of medical terminology, the ability to multitask, critical thinking skills, proficiency in computer software and databases are necessary.

Licenses and/or Certifications

Completion of a certified phlebotomy course is preferred

Physical Demands

Must be able to remain in a standing position 50% of the time, move about within the work area, access file cabinets, copier, and fax machines, walk to transport specimens, communicate, converse and exchange information and move, transport or position a minimum weight of 50 lbs.

Language Ability

Ability to read, write and interpret documents in English such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific/trade/technical journals. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers or regulatory agencies. Ability to speak clearly to patients and staff as well as physicians.

Math Ability

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and make responsible decisions.

Working Conditions

Potential exposure to chemicals and communicable diseases and related waste (including bodily fluids).

Salary Description
