LifePoint Health Phlebotomist in Hastings, Pennsylvania

Conemaugh Miners Medical Center is seeking a full-time Phlebotomist for their Laboratory department. The Phlebotomist will be under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager.* *Collects venous, capillary and arterial blood specimens on inpatients and outpatients following laboratory procedures and safe practices.Provides clerical tasks as required.Receives specimens and orders from outside sources and prepares requests. Prepares surgical specimens for transport to Memorial Medical Center and receipt of reports. Interacts with patients, physicians, nurses, laboratory personnel in a friendly and professional manner. Performs other related duties as required for the operation of the department. All duties are completed by utilizing the Commitments to Excellence.

Essential Responsibilities:

Must work closely with all laboratory staff regarding collection, receipt and processing of specimens.

Courteous and professional interaction with our patients, physicians, nurses and other hospital personnel using our CARING values.

Responsible for the proper collection of specimens in a manner consistent with laboratory procedures, safe practices and patient comfort.

Follows all hospital guidelines regarding Standard Precautions (ex. PPE, gloving, hand washing, etc.)

Selects the appropriate specimen collection devices (ex. tubes, proper additives, etc. in order to perform venipuncture, arterial puncture, and capillary puncture according to the Laboratory’s Specimen Collection manual.

Accurately interprets collection lists. For the outpatient setting, proper interpretation of physician orders.

Must identify patients using two patient identifiers and label specimens accurately at bedside.

Adequate inventory of necessary phlebotomy supplies should be maintained and baskets and draw areas should be kept clean neat and orderly. Maintains section supplies by performing an inventory on a weekly basis.

Any worn or malfunctioning equipment must be removed from service. The manager must be informed of this action.

Proper training of phlebotomists, staff, and students in the techniques of computer entry, venipuncture, arterial puncture, and capillary puncture is required.

Performs clerical duties such as checking orders, filing, and retrieving, faxing and copying written reports.

Demonstrates the knowledge of operation of office equipment such as fax, copier, computer and various printers.

Responds to STATS, code activations, and out-patient alert (buzzer) within a timely manner.

Maintains confidentiality regarding patient/employee information.

Provide appropriate care to patients of all ages (neonates to geriatrics).

Rotates all shifts according to schedule.

Job Qualification: * *Education:

High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalency is required.

**Graduate from an approved Phlebotomy Technician Program is preferred.

Previous training as a phlebotomistis preferred.

Experience:

Experience in a hospital or clinic setting performing phlebotomy is preferred.

Successful completion of 6 months of on-the-job training and orexperience in venipuncture, capillary puncture, blood gaspuncture, along with basic typing or computer skills is preferred.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

BLS/CPR within six months of hire is required.

Phlebotomy Technician (ASPT) is preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

Ability to perform blood collection techniques successfully on all ages (neonates to geriatrics).

Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with patients, employees, all hospital staff including physicians and visitors.

Ability to understand the standards and procedure for patient identification, specimen collection, specimen handling, safety and computer entry.
