    Position Summary

    HIGHLIGHTS

    SUNY Geneseo is seeking new employees to join the Facilities Department as Trades Specialist (Plumber Steamfitters). In this role, you will be responsible for all plumbing and steamfitting work, including:

  • planning and laying out work

  • repairing, maintaining, and installing plumbing fixtures and appliances

  • inspecting fixtures or equipment and using appropriate test equipment to determine the cause and location of trouble in cases of malfunction or breakdown

  • providing supervision in the installation, alteration, and repair of pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, ventilating, heating control, water, and drainage systems according to specifications and plumbing codes

  • following technical manuals, codes, diagrams, and previous experience to make repairs and order replacement parts

    Required Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Four years of full-time experience in plumbing under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, OR

an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in plumbing at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR

successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter) traineeship or a two-year plumbing training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.

  • Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math coursework, 45 hours of technical communications coursework, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading coursework. Coursework must be completed with an average of C or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.

    Preferred Qualifications

    DEPARTMENTAL OPERATING NEEDS

  • Proficiency in welding, bracing, and soldering using gas, arc and mig, as used in piping and plumbing applications.

  • Working knowledge of applicable plumbing code regulations and of the mathematics of the plumbing trade.

  • Ability to read, interpret and work from plans, drawings and specifications.

  • Possession of a valid NYS driver’s license

  • Proven record of dependability and past work performance, including satisfactory time and attendance record.

  • Possession of computer skills adequate to work with computerized maintenance management systems and other computerized applications

  • ACM certification

Function 1: General Plumbing Tasks

  • Removal and installation of plumbing equipment and service to buildings.

  • Planning new installations, alterations to existing installations, and major repairs consistent with specifications, plans, and plumbing codes.

  • Fixture replacements for anything with a drain or water, i.e., toilets, and sinks.

  • Unclogging drains and piping in new systems or repairing old systems.

  • Attending to the campus sewer system and piping, rainwater systems, and sewer stakeouts. Assembling and installing a variety of metal and non-metal pipe and pipe fittings, measuring, cutting, threading, and bending to the required angle.

  • Following technical manuals, codes, diagrams, and previous experience, plans work procedures to make repairs and order replacement parts according to plumbing code regulations.

  • Reviewing building plans and working drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of installation.

  • Drawing rough sketches or preparing plans to scale from oral or written instructions.

  • Estimating labor, materials, tools, and equipment necessary for the project based on blueprints and specifications.

  • Assembling materials, tools, and equipment required to complete the work according to the plans reviewed.

Function 2: General Maintenance

  • Maintaining preventative maintenance equipment: sprinkler systems, exit lights, generators, pumps, motors, air handlers, exhaust fans, make-up air systems, VAV , hot water systems, building envelope, roof, and drain systems.

  • Using appropriate test equipment such as pressure and vacuum gauges to determine the cause and location of trouble in cases of malfunction or breakdown.

  • Welding, brazing and soldering is done using gas and arc welding equipment.

  • Repairing doors, walls, floors, glass, furniture, masonry, lock repair, building envelope

Function 3: HVAC

  • Repairing and replacing heating, air conditioning parts, filters, belts, and motors.

  • Working with steam and their parts, traps, spence valves, lines and condensation systems, tube bundles, valves and some controls.

  • Working on air handlers, make-up air units, and exhaust fans.

  • Working with hot water systems, heating and domestic systems, hot water tanks, pumps, expansion tanks, piping and repair of the piping system.

  • Stakeout for sewer line on SUNY Geneseo’s property, reading prints and laying out markings of sewer lines

Function 4: Supervision

  • Instruct assistant & helper staff in day-to-day operations and duties and report on their progress.

  • Supervise and train others in performing the same or directly related work.

  • Give instructions and demonstrate proper plumbing techniques and the use of plumbing and steamfitting tools and equipment.

  • Observe and inspect the work while in progress and when completed to ensure it is done properly.
