Position Summary

SUNY Geneseo invites applications for an Instructional Designer to join the department of Computing & Information Technology. This position provides expertise to faculty in course design and creation, incorporating best practices in pedagogy, methodology, use of digital content, and course outcomes.

The Instructional Designer offers direct technical support to faculty, staff, and students utilizing various technologies in face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses. Instructional Designers analyze courses to ensure they meet or exceed online teaching standards using Geneseo’s course readiness checklist to review with faculty those criteria that may need further development before course delivery. They also administer the campus LMS in collaboration with SUNY services.

Professional development is encouraged and supported. The Instructional Designer will maintain expertise on supported digital technologies, including Brightspace Learning Management System, integrated digital tools, and communication tools. A successful candidate will be able to work on a highly collaborative technical team to provide training and documentation to the college community.

Flexible hybrid work arrangements may be an option subject to NYS , SUNY , and Geneseo rules, regulations, and policies.

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree by time of appointment

  • Demonstrated experience in providing instructional design and support and interest in how technology can be used to improve or transform instruction

  • Experience supporting and training for instructional tools such as learning management systems

  • Demonstrated technical troubleshooting, analysis, and problem-solving skills

  • Superior commitment to serving others with empathy, timeliness, accuracy, thoroughness, and professionalism

  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive working/teaching environment

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in educational technology, instructional technology, or related field

  • 1-2 years professional experience in Instructional Design and LMS administration

  • Professional experience in a higher education environment

  • Experience in teaching or taking courses in online or hybrid formats

  • Knowledge of Quality Matters, OSCQR , or other course accessibility standards

  • Experience creating documentation, tutorials, and instructional materials

  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for technology and its application to the teaching and learning environment

  • Collaboratively participate in the training and professional development of faculty and staff in the uses of instructional technologies, such as Brightspace, digital asset production and management (images, video, audio), lecture capture, presentation tools, and emerging technologies.

General Teams and Requirements

  • Follow CIT Policy and Procedures as defined by the Director and CIT Management Team. These include but are not limited to attending monthly CIT department meetings and regularly scheduled functional area meetings, posting time off to CIT department calendar, completing time off and travel requests, etc.

  • Perform incidental duties associated with day-to-day functions of the offices of Computing & Information Technology, most of which entail front-line interaction with campus computer users, both in person and by telephone. These tasks include [but are not limited to] resolving computing problems for walk-in users, answering the telephone and taking messages, and covering for staff absences.

  • Post, in a timely manner, to the status web page any scheduled changes and down times, outages and problems when appropriate.

  • Contribute to the publication of technical and informational newsletters, electronic communications, bulletins and CIT web pages where appropriate.

  • Contribute to the instruction of training courses for campus computing users and staff where appropriate.

  • Communicate regularly with colleagues and clients to keep them informed of activities and projects that interest or affect them. Report regularly to the Director and your area manager on the status of on-going projects.

  • Be conscious of CIT’s reputation on campus and work to improve it by effective communication, knowledgeable technical support and offering new services when appropriate.

  • Actively participate in CIT strategic planning and assessment processes.

  • Participate when requested on CIT Project Teams where your expertise is required and/or you have the opportunity to acquire new and relevant skills. Project Team participation may comprise a significant portion of your workload during the life of a given project and may include specific duties not outlined in this job description.
