JOB SUMMARY:

Adelphi University’s Theater Department invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor position in Acting (Voice) to start in Fall 2024. This is a one-year full-time non-tenure track position .

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. The candidate will teach courses including Voice and Diction, Dialects, Verse, and Shakespeare.

  2. There would be potential opportunities to act as vocal and dialect coach, to direct departmental productions, and to teach additional courses in the candidate’s area of interest.

  3. We welcome candidates who can demonstrate their approaches to questions regarding race and representation in contemporary and classical actor training; and be advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom and the profession.

  4. Faculty are expected to participate in teaching, professional and artistic service, and service to the institution, as well as participation in the day-to-day life of the department.

  5. The candidate would mentor students, assist in providing vocal and dialect support for Department of Theatre productions, maintain a vibrant professional creative or scholarly research agenda, and provide ongoing service to the university and profession.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • This position requires a terminal degree MFA.

  • The candidate should h ave at least three years teaching experience full-time or five years of experience teaching part-time in a university or college setting

  • Expertise in the voice training methodology of Kristin Linklater is welcome; certification in Linklater Voice is preferred, but not required. We will consider candidates who have experience with other significant voice and speech pedagogies, techniques, and training methodologies, such as Miller, Berry, Fitzmaurice, or nonwestern techniques.

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching verse, Shakespeare, and theatre styles. Proficiency in IPA is required

  • A record of professional accomplishments as a vocal coach, actor, or director.

  • Creative experience that centers the voices of varying regional communities.

  • Demonstrated capacity to apply diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in the classroom, production, and academic community.

  • Demonstrated capacity to mentor and prepare actors to enter the changing professional world.

  • Ability to engage in consensus-based collaboration with students, staff, and faculty.

      SALARY INFORMATION:

    In compliance with New York’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $75,000 - $77,500. Adelphi University considers factors such as departmental budgets, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. An annual base salary higher than the range may be warranted in circumstances where a candidate has demonstrable equivalent prior higher education experience at another University.
