JOB PURPOSE

The R&D Chemist II is responsible for independent hands on preparation of developmental emissions control catalysts for mobile and/or stationary source applications as called out in a program plan. Work consists of utilizing plant equipment to batch and coat prototype samples on a lab scale up through pilot scale. This role is will help coordinate activities of other R&D chemists in the group, train new hires, and suggest alternate methods of samples preparation to support new product scale-up. Duties also include suggesting and carrying out plant improvement projects to improve plant safety and efficiency.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Chemist I duties plus:

• Lead sub projects as part of IDEA to DEVELOP phase NPI teams as required.

• Responsible for adding program plans to group schedule.

• Initiates and leads continuous improvement projects seeking to improve processes and procedures to ensure best practices.

• Problem solve and adapt procedures, techniques, tools, and equipment in order to complete required sample preparation.

• Prepares and serves as owner of departmental forms and procedures.

• Writes experimental procedures for developmental work and updates experimental plans to include suggested improvements or alternate preparation methods.

• Creates and updates process guidelines.

• Attends NPI phase review meetings to provide feedback on processing.

• Begins to attend global processing meetings to obtain updates on coating developments.

• Researches articles and other presentations relevant to technology to stay current on processing techniques.

• Operate all equipment and instrumentation for catalyst preparation and experimental studies in a safe manner and keep working areas safe and clean.

• Be aware of health and safety issues associated with experimental plans and notify appropriate personnel of such issues.

• Handle all chemicals in a safe and proper manner with regard to chemical properties and procedures listed on SDS sheets. Properly dispose of waste generated by preparations and experiments.

• Maintain inventory of experimental samples. Responsible for accurate accounting of PGM following defined procedures.

• Comply with all Johnson Matthey Hazardous Waste procedures and local, state, and federal regulatory requirements.

• Comply with all environmental & health and safety federal, state, local regulations and company policies.

• To carry out or take on any other duties which are within the employee’s skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed.

Requirements for the role:

• Bachelor's Degree (Degree in Chemistry or Applied Science Preferred) with 3+ years related experience.

• Associates Degree (or equivalent college coursework) or Advanced Training Certificate in related field with 5+ years of related experience.

• High School Diploma with 7+ years of related experience; or any equivalent relevant combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

• General chemistry and strong math skills

• Awareness of NPI process

• Strong knowledge of MS Office applications

• Ability to identify potential batching/coating issues when reviewing sample preparation instructions.
