Job Title: School Counselor

DEPARTMENT: Administration

REPORTS TO: Principal

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

Position Summary: The School Counselor provides support services to the students enrolled at Health Sciences Charter School, counseling students on issues affecting their education in school and out of school, evaluating student's skills and abilities, and ensuring they are prepared for later vocational as well as educational opportunities.

Essential Functions:

  • Counsel students to help them understand and overcome their personal, social and/or behavioral issues affecting their education.

  • Provide crisis intervention to students during difficult situations at or outside of school.

  • Confer with parents or guardians, teachers, administrators, or other professionals to discuss student's progress, resolve behavioral, academic, or other problems regarding the student to determine how to meet the student's needs.

  • Preserve accurate and complete records as required by law, district policies and administrative standards.

  • Prepare students for later educational opportunities by evaluating their abilities, interests, skills, and personality characteristics using tests, records, interviews, or professional sources.

  • Aid students in career planning and career exploration.

  • Counsel students on educational issues, such as class selection, class scheduling and registration, school adjustments, excessive absenteeism, study habits, and career planning.

  • Conduct follow-up interviews to check the progress of students, identify whether their needs are being met and take initiatives to meet the student's needs.

  • Identify domestic problems that are affecting students and encourage them and their family to seek assistance from mental health professionals.

  • Work closely with the social workers

  • Provide additional support to students, educating them on drugs and alcohol prevention, sex education, and conflict resolution.

  • Creation and population of courses in Powerschool under the direction of the Principal, attach teachers to courses in Powerschool.

  • Enroll and oversee students in college courses.

  • Other duties as assigned and requested.

  • Work collaboratively to build a school culture that promotes the success of each student by level

  • Utilize data to create programs best suited to help each student achieve their full potential

  • Demonstrates an understanding of student needs and handles each situation equitably and sympathetically

  • Utilizes technology and data in counseling initiatives and program planning.

  • Incorporates data from individual testing/assessment results to guide and support students toward the appropriate course of study given a students strengths, aptitudes, interests and long-term goals.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree in School Counseling preferred

  • Certification in School Counseling required

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, electronic student management, grading, and other instructional technologies
