Brief Job Description

There are two (2) Graduate Assistant positions available. These are one semester positions and a renewal depends on academic standing, university budget approval, and must be in good standing.

Graduate Assistants in Chemistry assist in the teaching of introductory chemistry laboratory courses (100-300 level) by performing the following: 1) Presenting pre-laboratory talks designed to help students prepare for the laboratory experience; 2) Overseeing the laboratory sessions; 3) Enforcing safety rules and rules governing good laboratory practice during the laboratory sessions; 4) Answering student questions concerning the laboratory experience both during the laboratory session and during office hours; 5) Assisting in the grading of laboratory assignments and quizzes when appropriate; 6) Assisting in the preparation of materials required in laboratory-based classes; 7) Occasionally helping to proctor exams in large lecture sections.

Required Qualifications

Current or entering full-time (6 credit hours) matriculated graduate student at Buffalo State University while holding the position. Candidates must have: completed a minimum of 24 credit hours in chemistry with a G.P.A. of 2.6 or better (on a 4.0 scale); completed a full year of college-level physics and at least one semester of college-level calculus; completed one year of general chemistry and one year of organic chemistry with laboratories. The candidate must be able to effectively communicate with undergraduate students through the delivery of pre-laboratory presentations and classroom discussions of safety issues, and via conversations with individual students during laboratory sessions and required office hours.

Preferred Qualifications

Full-time graduate student in the M.S. in Forensic Science, M.S. Ed. or a M.S. in Multidisciplinary Studies program that includes a minimum of 12 credits of graduate level CHE and FOR coursework; completion of a course in analytical chemistry with lab; completion of a course in physical chemistry; completion of a course in Biochemistry with lab; prior teaching experience in a science laboratory course.
