EPI Behavioral Technician in Broome, New York

Empowering People's Independence (EPI), provides support for people with developmental disabilities, epilepsy, and brain injury through progressive, tailored care to improve their health, wellbeing, independence, and social inclusion.

Job Purpose:

Provide behavioral services for individuals as assigned. Function as an Interdisciplinary Team (IT) member and assure compliance with all applicable standards. As a Behavior Technician, you will take a lead role in enhancing behavior management skills with the people we support. You will administer adaptive/positive behavioral support services with evidenced based outcomes under the supervision of the Behavior Specialist. You will provide supports to people who have dual diagnoses of an Intellectual Disability, Developmental Disability, and a variety of Psychiatric Diagnoses. You will provide supports as assigned to people who have a Forensic Background.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintain the health and wellbeing of the people EPI serves.

  • Understand and support those served who are diagnoses with Intellectual Disabilities, Developmental Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, various psychiatric disorders, and those with Forensic Backgrounds.

  • Collaborate with the service recipient and his or her Interdisciplinary Team to develop behavior support goals and intervention methods to effectively address the individual’s needs.

  • Provide proactive supports and crisis intervention for individuals consistent with the Behavior Support Plan (BSP) and/or Medication Monitoring Plan (MMP).

  • Under supervision of a Behavioral Intervention Specialist, obtain and maintain documentation of required approvals and consents for BSPs/MMPs per regulatory standards.

  • Supervise the data collection system and assume responsibilities for reviewing data and completing monthly summaries for assigned caseload.

  • Provide information and consultation to the Interdisciplinary Team, volunteers, and other service providers on an ongoing basis including regular attendance at individual psychiatric appointments.

  • Report all policy violations to appropriate personnel.

  • Observe and interpret individual behavior and offer practical solutions to behavior support issues, reporting any changes as required.

  • Effectively manage challenging behaviors proactively, respectfully, and by avoiding the use of aversive or deprivation intervention techniques.

  • Act as a mandated reporter of abuse. Promote an abuse-free environment.

  • Record client behavior (data collection, case notes).

  • Provide a safe, supportive environment for the clients.

  • Focus on the person we support and what is best for them, collaborating with other teams to implement plans and measure results.

  • Assist with development and implementation of staff training, behavior plans, and crisis intervention as assigned by the behavior specialist.

  • Completes all necessary documentation in a timely manner.

  • Safely transports individuals to and from activities and/or necessary medical/psychiatric appointments as needed. At minimum meets the person supported at their appointments as assigned.

  • Ensures supplies are available to meet individuals’ needs.

  • Participates in general staff meetings, in-service training and other pertinent agency and community program meetings.

  • Update all assigned paperwork as needed; obtain necessary signatures for approval, including parent/guardian and human rights committee when applicable.

  • Attend psychiatry appointments with individuals assigned to caseload as needed.

  • Prepare and bring behavior data and relevant information to psychiatry appointments.

  • Maintain contact with mental health counselors for individuals assigned to caseload through regular emails and/or phone calls.

  • Write a behavioral summary of behavior documentation and relevant information for individuals assigned to caseload.

  • Review all behavior support plans and document no less frequently than semi-annually. Include a review and analysis of the frequency, duration, and/or intensity of use of restrictive/intrusive interventions and/or limitations on a person’s rights included in the behavior support plan.

  • Attend ISP/Life Plan meetings, Clinical Meetings, and staff meetings as needed.

  • Attend admission and pre-admission meetings as assigned.

  • In-service behavior support plans as needed at staff meetings.

  • Complete residential and day hab visits/observations as needed to gather information for behavior support plans and to provide recommendations for staff.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor of Behavioral Services and/or designee within scope of practice.

    Compliance:

  • Must maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion concerning all business-related matters, including but not limited to board/vendors/donors’ names, investigations, finance, operations, and employee relations matters.

  • Must be willing to complete specific company required trainings as mandated by our governing agency, Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), at time of hire and annually thereafter.

  • Must adhere to all departmental /company policies & procedures at all times & ensure compliance with direct report.

    Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma and 3 years' experience working directly with individuals with intellectual disabilities implementing behavioral services.

  • OR associate’s degree in human services or related field with a minimum of 2 years' experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities. A concentration in behavioral sciences is preferred.

  • OR bachelor’s degree in psychology or related field with a concentration in behavioral science.

  • One year of experience working directly with individuals with developmental disabilities and the implementation of behavioral support plans preferred.

    Computer Skills:

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft programs to include Email, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams

    Qualifications:

  • Valid NYS driver’s license required. Must have access to timely and reliable transportation to transport self to multiple sites. A vehicle is required to perform the job.

  • Per Funders requirements may have to be SCIP-R certified; EPI may require the completion of training to teach the SCIP-R curriculum.

  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English.

  • Maintain current certifications with all required trainings including but not limited to CPR & First Aid.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with and promptly respond to individuals EPI serves and staff.

  • Ability to remain calm and act rationally in crisis situations.

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret policies, procedures, regulations, clinical plans, data and individual service plans.

  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, procedure manuals, and other required communications.

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to groups of individuals EPI serves, their families, employees, representatives of oversight agencies, other service providers, and the general public.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of options in situations where only limited instructions exist. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions.

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

    While performing the duties of this position, exposure to changing weather conditions will occur.
