UPMC Graduate Pharmacist, Rx Partners in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania

UPMC Rx Partners is looking for a Graduate Pharmacist to join their dedicated team!

The Graduate Pharmacist will, under supervision and according to precise procedure, assists pharmacists in technical and supportive functions such as compounding, packaging, labeling and distributing pharmaceuticals. Engages in other activities to facilitate day-to-day operations of the department. Provides orientation and guidance to new pharmacy technicians and pharmacy students as required.

This role will work rotating shifts, between the hours of 7 am and midnight. Rotating Saturday/Sunday shifts. Candidates should be flexible to meet the needs of the department.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare medication orders from general requisitions for certain clinics and departments when requested.

  • Attends required training and maintains current knowledge of procedures.

  • Accurately and completely fills in all the documentation required for the extemporaneous compounding worksheet binder, unit dose repackaging log and the starter dose log. Uses these medications only after checked and initialed by a pharmacist. Operates the repackaging machine for oral solid dosage forms.

  • Check assigned pharmacy medication section to ensure that all drugs are current/non-expired and in adequate supply. Disposes of unused and/or contaminated drugs/solutions. Submits monthly inspection report of the assigned pharmacy department sections to the lead pharmacists. Ensures drug storage bins and shelves are clean and dust free.

  • If assigned to refill automated dispensing cabinet, is responsible for handling and refilling controlled substances as necessary, as detailed in the Automated Dispensing Cabinet Policy.

  • Receive and sort medication order to appropriate work area. Select correct pharmaceuticals and prepares for dispensation by counting or otherwise calculating proper dosage. Packages/bottles medications and types accurate labels for extemporaneous compounds and dispenses a 24-hour supply of drugs.

  • Communicate with nursing staff in order to clarify drug orders and answer routine questions.

  • Check in and puts away the daily drug order from the pharmaceutical vendor noting back ordered items. Orders pharmacy supplies from Central Sterile & Distribution as well as from outside vendors.

  • Maintains an organized workstation. Cleans counters and equipment. Discards waste appropriately. Keeps sinks clean and washes pharmaceutical glassware and utensils.

  • Fill medication carts accurately and expediently utilizing the necessary reports generated by the pharmacy management system.

  • Prepare chemotherapeutic agents as well as investigatory drugs under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.

  • Replenishes all pharmacy stock areas and stock solutions as needed. Refills drug bins, shelves and automated dispensing cabinets. Obtains items from storeroom. Removes outdated supplies from shelves. Informs inventory specialist of those items requiring a purchase order.

  • Prepares intravenous admixtures according to prescribed formulae that have been checked by a pharmacist. Reconstitutes vials when necessary and prepares individualized unit dose syringes and I.V. drips. Performs the operations of the PC program and CRT terminal for sterile product applications. Performs proper scrub procedures for preparing sterile products. Adheres to department policy and procedure for working in the I.V. room.

  • B.S. degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D.) required.

  • Analytical ability necessary to calculate charges and dosage and convert units of measure.

  • Ability to weigh and measure using pharmacy balance and analytical balances.

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to appropriately interact and communicate with nursing personnel, other Hospital staff, insurance carriers, patients and families.

  • Ability to interpret needs and advise others as necessary.

  • Basic typing and computer skills necessary to operate the pharmacy management system, fax machine and pneumatic tube system.

  • Ability to accurately code information for billing, insurance, registration and related purposes.

  • Attention to detail a must.
