Responsibilities:
· Demonstrates awareness of department efficiency.
· Complies with safety policies, including bloodborne pathogen procedures.
· Reports equipment malfunctions.
· Establishes effective communication strategies.
· Responds to emergent situations within the nursing assistant role.
· Takes action to improve knowledge and skills.
· Provides feedback to RNs on patient care and status changes.
· Adheres strictly to patient care and hospital policies.
· Identifies learning needs and maintains professional relationships.
· Ensures a safe patient environment by performing safety checks, maintaining cleanliness, and organizing equipment.
· Participates in self-review and suggests departmental changes.
· Assists with universal unit activities (e.g., call lights, meal trays, patient transport).
· Provides direct patient care (bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating).
· Acquires and distributes supplies and equipment.
· Performs routine tests (vital signs, blood glucose monitoring).
· Receives feedback constructively.
· Provides companionship and supervision to patients.
· Handles patient nourishments and mail distribution.
· May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as needed.
· Documents in the medical record according to procedures.
Experience Required:
- None (you will be provided with an 8-day training course to prepare you for the role)
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
If no previous hospital or pre-hospital training, successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class OR successful completion of the first year of clinical work in a nursing program.
Successful completion of basic information system training.
Microcomputer experience preferred.
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
