Alfred University Chair, Division of Education/Assistant Professor in Alfred, New York

Alfred University's College of Liberal Arts & Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track professor in Education and Chair of the Education Division to begin no later than July 2025. Candidate review begins immediately. We seek an educator with leadership experience to provide oversight for a growing program in Teacher Education: one who is committed to excellence in the field of teacher education who will help students connect theory and practice in the classroom and who brings a current understanding of pedagogical best practices, with an emphasis on educational technology. This position provides opportunities to mentor graduate and undergraduate students and to expand our programs in Early Childhood/Childhood Education, Adolescent Education and Art Education as well as our graduate programs in Literacy and Inclusive & Special Education. The Chair provides leadership for both the program on the main campus in Alfred, NY and for our extension program at SUNY Corning. 

Salary:$53,000-$60,000

Qualifications:

Chair/Leadership responsibilities:

  • Oversee all operations of the Division of Teacher Education, including the Early Childhood/Childhood major, Art Education and Adolescent Education programs, and our extension programs with Corning Community College, including the graduate programs in Literacy and Inclusive & Special Education

  • Hire, mentor, and retain Division faculty members – conducting observations each semester and guiding faculty members through the promotion and tenure process

  • Conduct short- and long-term planning for the continuous improvement of our program

  • Guide the accreditation process with our partners in AAQEP (Association for the Advancement of Quality in Educator Preparation): the next site visit/process will take place in 2027

  • Establish and maintain connections and working relationships with local superintendents and principals to better meet the needs of PK-12 education in our region

  • Serve as the liaison to the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and the Office of Teaching Initiatives (OTI) and AAQEP

  • Supervise Annual Title II reporting process

  • Serve on University committees including Curriculum and Teaching Committee

  • Work with the Admission Office on recruitment of future Education majors and minors

  • Plan and host Advisory Board meetings for local stakeholders

  • Report to both the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the dean of Graduate and Continuing Studies

  • Responsible for Education Division facilities in Myers Hall

  • Maintain a strong connection to and working relationship with our partners in our SUNY Corning program

  • Teach courses in one or more of the following areas:

  • Social Foundations of Education

  • Math and Science Education

  • Childhood/Early Childhood Education Methods and Practicum

  • Graduate Literacy Program

  • Math for the Elementary Teacher

  • Classroom Technology

  • Educational Theory

  • Inclusive and Special Education—graduate and undergraduate

  • ​​​​​​​ Supervise of student teaching field experience

  • Supervise of and collaborate with the Certification and Placement Office

  • Advise and mentor students

  • Engage in service to the Education Division, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the University, our community, and the profession

    Requirements:

  • Earned doctorate

  • PK-12 Classroom Teaching Experience

  • Student Teacher Supervision

  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education

  • Use of Education Theory to inform teaching practice

    Desired Experiences:

  • Experience with AAQEP Accreditation

  • Special/Inclusive Education and/or literacy education
