SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Health Director, the employee will manage the Health Promotion and Planning program by supervising staff, delivering health and nutrition related programming to the community and providing oversight for the NYS W.I.C program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Health Promotion
Supervise the Health Promotion & Planning Program staff,
Provide health related education, as needed for several Tribal Programs including the Office for the Aging, Early Childhood Developmental Program, Partridge House, IRA’s and Health Services;
Plan and deliver education activities for various age groups consisting of informational displays, group discussion, newsletter development, community events, physical activity instruction, one-to-one settings and home visits when needed,
Approval and analysis of menus as needed;
Attend required trainings and meetings for each tribal program;
Responsible for Program budget development, execution and monitoring,
Responsible planning and implementing employee wellness activities throughout the year,
Aid in coordinating events to improve GPRA activities,
Sit on various Tribal committees for help planning annual activities,
Coordinate monthly health observance activities with other Health Service programs.
Provide cooking demonstrations and lunch-n-learn activities;
Plan and implement employee wellness activities;
Plan and implement community wellness events throughout the year
Women, Infant and Children program (WIC)
Plan, organize, coordinate and participate in the development and administration of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe WIC Program, including prevention and education services, nutrition education,
Prescribe food packages/issue food benefits after properly determining eligibility of WIC participants,
Provide nutrition and breastfeeding support, education and counseling to all eligible participants,
Responsible for WIC program budget, reports, QA policy and procedure updates,
Maintain and update education materials for clients,
Maintain cooperative relations with other community agencies and health care providers for referrals,
Serve as WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator, obtain Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC) within one year,
Attend WIC training as required/requested,
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervise the Health Promotion & Planning Staff,
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Organization and multi-tasking are key elements for success
Experience with and/or knowledge of Native American Cultures is an asset
Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office applications
Ability to work evenings and weekends
Ability to do Public Speaking in groups, on radio and on TV
Ability to interact effectively with all age groups.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, Community Health or Public Health with
1 year experience working in public health, WIC or maternal child health programs and
3 years supervisory experience in the related fields, preferred.
OR
Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, Community Health or Public Health with
3 years’ experience working in public health, WIC or maternal child health programs
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Strong oral and written communication skills required. Must have computer skills for documentation purposes.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
